it had now been a few weeks since bucky and steve painted the walls of their now shared apartment, steve insisted on bucky moving in after he saw bucky's lonely living conditions.
they didn't call eachother boyfriends, they just knew they belonged to eachother. their hands fit so perfectly in eachother, just like how their lips were made for eachother's to taste. their love was one of a kind, like a love story only written about in poems and songs. steve was bucky's miracle, bucky was steve's. when they had nothing they had eachother.
bucky woke steve up every morning by gently kissing his fragile eyelashes until his piercing bluebell eyes opened and stared back at bucky's. bucky knows there will be a day in which the love of his life won't wake from his slumber, rather stay basked in it. bucky knows when steve dies, sunflowers and roses will blossom from his veins and continue beaming life to bucky.
it was a friday afternoon. steve taking more handfuls of days off work to spend what felt like his last days with bucky.
the doctors told bucky it wasn't looking good.
"i'm going to stick around enough to annoy you for along as i can, bucky" steve told bucky as they sat in the car after the appointment. bucky had tears streaming down his face as steve smiled. "oh i know, baby. i'm not going to let you let go, not just yet" the two then shared a kiss in the front seat, tears dripping between their tongues as they grasped eachother. steve knew his time could quite nearly be up.
bucky was already grieving steve although he was always by his side, still beaming as brightly as ever. he truly believed steven grant rogers had the sunshine at his finger tips. when he touched bucky he lit up the galaxy inside of him, they clashed like two entities. bucky's moonlight cold insides were churned by steve's sweet talk and sunflower touch. they were so beautiful together.
steve and bucky spent a lot of their days wrapped around eachother in steves bed, looking at eachother. their naked legs overlapping one another. bucky's hand entangled in steve's hair, he wanted to paint steve's face in his head permanently, engrave it in his memory for the rest of his life.
"my beautiful, beautiful boy." bucky would whisper. "quit it buck, you're making me blush." steve would say back shyly before kissing bucky.
"i'm treating you to dinner tonight, sweetheart" bucky smiled, his thumb stroking steve's cheek as he spoke. "really? where too." steve smiled. "the little diner down the road, the one you like" bucky smiled. "and you can have whatever you want, roast lamb, and cherry pie for dessert. whatever you want" bucky had tears welling in his eyes. he knew he had to make every last moment with steve perfect before it was too late.
"god buck, treating me like a king" steve rolled his eyes playfully and smiled. "it's what you deserve, mi corazon" bucky said before kissing steve's hand.
the two dressed themselves smartly, bucky wearing a casual white shirt with a shaded black blazer, steve wearing a similar white shirt and a long khaki pullover jacket to keep him warm.
"let's go, you look as dashing as always." bucky smiled, taking steve's hand in his own as they walked the cold brooklyn streets, the transition to autumn coming quicker than they had thought.
they walked hand in hand to the diner, the streets were quiet as the sunset. they asked for a table for two and sat down. they both asked for the same roast lamb and the same cherry pie. quite frankly bucky didn't care what he ate, he was just so grateful steve was still right in front of him.
it was mid main course when bucky grabbed steve's hand lightly and spoke. "steve, i want you to know i love you. you are the sunlight at the end of the tunnel, my dear." steve wiped his face, napkin in his free hand as he smiled. "gosh buck don't get all soppy, you know i'll cry" bucky's eyes were already welling up. he couldn't help it. "and you make me so happy, you are so warm. i am at my calmest when i'm resting next to you. i want my soul to lay with yours forever. thank you, my dear. thank you for being my angel, thank you for being the only thing to ever matter more than myself to me. you are worth this whole world" soft tears planted on bucky's cheeks as he spoke, as they did on steve's too.
"i love you so much, bucky. i have limited days left and i want to spend every single last moment with you. when i'm gone, promise me to not cry for days, promise me you will keep buying sunflowers from peggy. promise me you will decorate your living room with them, promise me you will keep me alive in that sense. it's all i ask of you, my dear" bucky's eyes dropped as he nodded, taking steve's hand and kissing his skinny fingers lightly, remembering the taste. it was of soft milk and cinammon. steve truly did have the sunshine at his fingertips.
the two finished crying and ate their cherry pie, they payed and french kissed eachother after they left the restaurant. "you taste like cherries, buck" steves fingers were gripping bucky's hair as he entwined their tongues.
"let's get home" bucky pulled away before wrapping his arm around steve's waist as they walked. steve and bucky were living in a daydream, bucky made sure steve lived his last days like a fairytale. he wasn't going to let him fade away in his apartment bed. he wasn't going to let him grow sicker, he wasn't going to let him feel like he was dying.
it was bucky's plan, to not let the love of his life feel like they are wasting away.
