Today was the day. My hands were shaking. I gulped down hot saliva, about to throw up. Opal steadies me as we exit the Training and Boarding tower and enter the Hovercraft. It was like a circle with a second circle in the middle, and a long walkway into the Hovercraft. There were 24 kids lining up in their District order. I hear a cry from the last person in the line, a District 12 girl. I recognised her as May- she had deep green eyes, short brown hair and tanned skin. She had received a 7 in her score- it was obvious that she wasn't going to win. Peacekeepers near her, and before I can see what happens Opal pulls me onto the Hovercraft. The last thing I hear is a loud, painful slap, before a whimper and silent cries.
We sat in the seats and a man came around with an injection. Some of the kids eyes watered when it was injected.
'What's in it?' A young boy asks, pulling his arm away. The man grabs it, injects the thing into it and it glows yellow.
'A tracker for you in the arena.' I'm next, and I hold out my arm. After he injects it, he shakes my hand unnoticeably.
'Good luck Abigail,' he says so quietly I can barely hear it. 'I'm rooting for you.' As if nothing happened, he moved over to Keil. I had such a reputation- I wonder how they would feel when I died. Or lived. A silent whir of the motor enters the room, and we feel the Hovercraft going upwards. Some are grinning broadly, having the amazing experience, others silently crying, knowing what their fate was. It was hardly a 10 minute drive- yet it was a painful one. Being surrounded by a mixture of different emotions, not knowing which to pick. We hardly noticed when we landed, and we were escorted outside with out mentors. Well, not outside. We took turns going into an elevator which hooked to an underground tunnel, below the arena. Opal, Keil and I entered and exited swiftly. It was a combination of metal walkways, smooshed together, undecided of which route they were to take. We see a tunnel labeled 8 and go down it. It opens into two separate rooms, quite far away from each other. Opal goes to see Keil first, so I am left with Rissa during the countdown. Here eyes are watery, tears gently sliding down her face. Today she looked normal- almost human. Only a little bot of make up, and although she wore a crazy golden dress, her hair was blonde instead of green (her latest colour- she dyes her hair every few days) and her skin almost skin colour, only slightly fading to pink. She notices me noticing the changes.
'I did this for you dear- for all the Tributes.' She says, cradling my face gently. 'It's my fifth year and only now I realise how... Treacherous this must be for you.' A 2 minute warning pops up on the wall, counting down my mere seconds to live. She takes out what looks like a small sheet of paper and see it is an extremely thin, white screen which you can bend just like paper. She taps it, and an image of all 12 chariots pop up as a bird's eye view.
'This website, talking about the pre-game events has almost all of it's comments about you, see?' She scrolls down to a long comments section. Many root for Cydeny, others for Heli, District 3, some for Keil, and many for me and Madeline. They say things like:
Rooting for these fawws!
Reckon this is the best power-team this year
An 11 from Abigail- #Abigail811
Cydeny is gonna win for sure watks
Just betted 50 tokens for the Carrers!
Madeline betta win this year, being the pretty and intelligent girl she is!
No way, Abbigail won't hesitate durning the finals.
I don't know what Fawws or Watks means, but I think it means kids and people. The Capitol language is so strange. I notice that in the last comment they spelt my name differently.
