I ran. I didn't stop. The wind was hitting my face, not cold, not hot. My legs where aching. I kept on running though, until I was hidden by the trees. I collapsed against a tree, sweating. I glance to the side to see the sun just coming up. It was beautiful. Like my golden bed sheets back at the Capitol. How I missed the luxuries there...
A rustle from behind startles me. I stand up and prepare myself for a fight. Instead I see Madeline, wearing a deep blue shirt. Our shirts symbolised our district. I laugh.
'You scared me!' I say. She comes closer and shows me a backpack, covered in blood.
'Almost killed a guy trying to get this,' She pants. Madeline extends her arm to see a long, bloody gash. I gasp and observe the wound.
'Here, I found an area inside a hill where we can hide,' She says. 'We can take care of it in there.' For a 13 year old girl, she was very mature. I was 14 and still admired her. I nod and follow her to a small hill. We walk around to the entrance which just looks like the grassy back of the hill, until she peels the thick grass curtain back to reveal a small curved room. It was perfect. It was 2x2 meters, and let the light in. From the outside, you couldn't tell if a person was in there or not.
I dump the large back at the back and she stares in awe. I open it to show her what I got. The spears, the knives, matches, torch, bag of mixed foods, bread- and only one sleeping bag! I'm such an idiot.
'This is amazing Abigail! We can survive around a week with this! Here's my bag, but I don't think it has much.' She hands it to me and I unzip it to find a small, thin blanket, a knife and a loaf of bread. I pick up the blanket, which could barely wrap around me.
'Well this is useless,' I state. Taking out my knife, I cut it into four long strips. I put two away, then proceed to wrap the other two around her wound. She flinches and I try be a bit more careful.
'Tonight we need to search for water,' she sighs. 'Hopefully we find some quickly.' Water, strangely, was the only thing not present at the Cornucopia. We sat there for most of the morning and afternoon, discussing our tactics.
'Where would the Career pack be, do you think?' I ask. That was the question that was bugging me the most.
'Not at the Cornucopia, that's for sure.' I frown. She sees my expression.
'You know how hard that climb was, even if you weren't under pressure. As I was running I only saw a few of them go in, then quickly run off in a pack- the other two you killed. The best tactic would be surrounding.' Madeline explains. She grabs a handful of nuts that I had got out, but I had to ration them.
'See, every arena is a circle, so the only way that they could kill everyone would be to cover the area is a fast and easy way. They would have to spilt up to cover more ground, then meet up somewhere. I just don't know their tactics yet.' I stare at her in disbelief.
'You figured all that out yourself?'
'Well, I did spent a lot of time at the Strategy Station. Where did you think that Nine came from?'
Silence. It was then when we decided to leave- just as the sun was lowering, around 5 pm. We left out stuff there and put a dagger in the top of the hill to remember which hill it was and set off with the small bag- which we filled with food and matches, just in case. We wondered past more and more trees, yet there was no sign of water. My lips were getting dry. What if we didn't find any water? I shake the thought out of my head. I had to think of Madeline, not myself. Suddenly I hear a screech.
'Abigail- don't-' I feel something tighten around my foot, reacting to my movements. I am yanked up into the air, and bang my head against a tree as I hang from a trap, dangling upside down. Maddy rushes towards me, but is then pulled up. We both refuse to scream, knowing that that would bring in Tributes.
'How do we get out?' She whimpers. I try look around, but the blood was rushing to my head and making me feel dizzy. My vision is getting blurred.
'Abigail!' She demands. I am woken from my daze and try think. Madeline. She had to survive this.
'The tree...' I mumble faintly. 'The trap... Came from a tree...' I point weakly behind her. I was on the verge of passing out. I hit the tree too hard.
'Maddy- get onto a branch... There has to be a branch...' My vision gets blurrier and I see her figure, twisting around. I hear a satisfied 'ah!' And her her call my name. It sounds distant and underwater.
'Abigail? Abigail!' Are the last words I hear, before I pass out.
Author's Note:
Cliffhanger!!! Oh yeah! Sorry if Abigail seems to be getting all the public attention, but I thought through the eyes of a Capitol person.
😜😝, Alix
