Our new character is....
Eli!
This violent girl from District Five is a fighter and will not hesitate to kill. With long, dirty blonde hair and green piercing eyes, she hides her evil nature easily.'You can't be serious.' I stammered. Madeline nodded her head, her dirty hair following her movments. It was 7 am, the earth still shaken from the DUMB Mechanism. It happened again. We barely made it out alive, Madeline almost tripping into the gap. Another cannon went off that morning. 4 left. I fumbled with my fingers as I tried to think of something to change Madeline's mind. The sun was lazily ignoring hu, not bothering to shine in our direction, leaving us in a gloomy shadow.
'But they can easily kill each other off! We can survive on the fish until the time comes!' I reason. Madeline unfolds her crossed arms.'And wait for this Arena to get smaller and smaller? We have had 3 DUMB's so far. Do you know what happens when we get to the fifth? Huh?' She cries. Madeline turns, her back to me. There was a long gash in the clothing, from the last race.
'The area is getting smaller and smaller. It's the first Quarter quell, right? Two and five. During the second DUMB I was sure we would hardly have any land left. But since the third, I realise that it is the fifth that will destroy us. You understand?' She weeps, some sobs coming out. She spins, pulls her shirt to wipe her eyes and sighs.
'Let's just leave. Please?' Madeline looks at me. I heave and nod. She smiles a small thank you, then returns to packing the sack that she volunteers to carry. We threw dirt over last nights small fire and May's blood. Telling her was hard. Seeing her wake, noticing May's absence, seeing the blood trail, finally landing her eyes on me with a shocked expression. I flinch, remembering her rage before she found out that May was the one who was killing, not me. But that anger, that power that came from Madeline was unrecognisable. We passed over many hills, hidden by the trees, until Madeline pauses. I stop and immediately look around, my senses opening. I pulled her down behind a boulder with me and patted my belt. Where was my knife? With hurrying fingers, I clasped my sweaty hands around the cool metal. Instantly, I rose from my spot, raised my dagger and-
Madeline put her hand on my arm, my dagger still in my hand. I saw the object that we sensed clatter onto the ground, only meters away.
'A parachute!' She gasps. As she rushes towards the metal box, i put my knife back into my belt. That was a close one. If that were a Tribute, who knows what would have been of us. I walk forwards and crouch down to examine the contents. Madeline had laied them out carefully. It was drawing to a close, the Games, meaning that stuff was more expensive. No doubt the majority were betting on us. Madeline subtly passes a small note to me- from Opal- so the cameras don't see. It quickly glance at it, one of out only contacts from the outside.May drama went wild! Almost everyone is betting on you guys, but many are still with Careers and Eli. Tip: Madeline's DUMB Theory? On the spot. Good luck.
-OpalI regretfully destroy the note before moving onto the packages. There were two cloths- one crimson and one blue. They were folded into tiny, minuscule cubes. I unravel one to find it unfold into a delicate, beautiful, poncho. Golden swirls rimmed the base, and a hood was attatched. Madeline's was the same. They were amazing.
'How much would these have cost?' She asks in awe, holding the fabric out in front of her as if it were the most precious thing in the world.
'In the Capitol? Probably 500 Tokens,' I reply. She nods. 'Each.' I add. Madeline looks up towardsthe sky.
'Dear Capitol people.... I'm- We're speechless! All I can say is.....You guys rock!' She says. I laugh. She holds up two fingers spread out into the sky, and I follow.
'Our symbol,' she tells me. 'One for each of us, both different, yet connected by the same hand.' We end it there. The capito, would be roaring now, begging for interviews with Opal. How funny, I thought, would it be if a Mentor were enthusing how great there Tribute then- at that moment, halfway in the interview- they died! How silly they would look! It was a random thought. I shook it off, and put the poncho on straight away.Madeline grabbed two small steaming pots, 5 centimetres in height and three in radius, and a large loaf of bread. This was beyond amazing at this point in the games. We would be lucky just to get one pot. Madeline turned and smiled at me. I return that smile. We'd hit the jackpot.
Whilst Madeline was preparing dinner with some berries, I leaned against a hill. It was strange- a Tribute had been here, for a dagger was pierced into the roof. My eyebrows crossed. Dagger in the top of a hill? My brain clicks. I bend down and pull up the lacy blanket to see our small, old shelter from the begining. A few bugs ran out, but a bed of grass had grown, like a soft green pillow. At the back was a abandoned knitted bag, I recognised as our nut bag we had left there last time, along with three knives. I turn around and show Madeline my discovery. But instead of beaming, her face is shocked. Scared. Angry. She isn't staring at me. But something behind me. The only thing I think as I hear Madeline screamed was,
God help us.Author's Note:
