It was on the afternoon of the seventh day when Madeleine noticed the smell. It was a stickly, feverish smell. Like burnt coals thrown into the trash. Once she told us, we noticed that it was indeed there.
'Where is it from?' I wondered outloud. May shook her head.
'It's stronger at the edge of our camp than it is from over here, so maybe there. It stays to the ground, the smell. ' She suggested, pointing forwards, where Madeline was wondering. A gasp escaped from her.
'Abigail! May! Look!' She cried. I rushed towards her as she knelt at the base of a tree. There was a green mould faintly growing from it.
'The trees are posinous?' May asks, stepping back a bit.
'No, something is floating in the air and attached itself to the tree. But only at the base,' Madeline pointed out. She turned and looked at me. I almost heard the cogs turn in her head. Her eyes widen and her expression is shocked.
'Abigail- you said all the animals were limp and oozing, right?' She questions.
'Yes, except the...birds!' I said, and as I finished the sentence something in my brain clicked. Strange smell. Growth on ground. Dead animals.'Plauge,' I breathed. Madeline released my shoulders and ran her hand over her hair, stressed.
'A drifting plauge,' May repeats. 'That sticks to the ground- oh lord. Guys, someone released a plague killing all the animals that are on land!' She says, putting her hand over her mouth.
'Why isn't it affecting us?' I ask. Madeline kicks the mould off and it slowly disintergrates, turning into tiny particles flying invisible in the wind.
'It was released on the ground, meaning it was meant to only hurt animals on the ground. Someone released a plauge that kills animals to try starve us off!' As if to prove her point, a cannon went off. That was the first in days. I take out my dagger.
'I can still hunt birds and fish- they didn't think of that, huh?' I suggest. May smiles. 'Perfect! I'll be able to use that info for... When we part ways.' She sighs. It was hard to believe, but twice in the past few days I felt as if though I wasn't in the game. I was with some friends, camping out in the middle of nowhere. I wish it were that easy. But we currently had 5 ememies- 6 after May leaves, than it just us two. That is the only though that surrounds me as we sleep. My stomach grumbled- bird meat and a few eggs weren't enough. We dared not to pick any berries or vegetables, as the plague was growing on them too. Madeline swore loudly, and I had laughed. The moon was directly above me. 12 o'clock, I thought. No sooner I heard the anthem play. I saw Madeline, asleep, huddled in the sleeping bag with May, who was also asleep. Both so innocent. The girl I recognise was from the Career Pack. I eagerly watch the replays. It shows a girl, with a bow and arrow, hiding behind a tree near the Corpaconia. She steps out, then shoots a arrow towards it. It falls short, yet the second one she draws hits the girl- the Career who died tonight- who was sitting on the Corpaconia. I then see a horrible sight. Keil and his group, surrounded by a decent amount of food and some weapons. It came to me like blasts.
They were camping on the Corpaconia.
Bang.
They received sponsorship for the plauge.
Bang.
They gathered enough food, sat up there and released the plauge.
Bang.
They were waiting for us to come crawling back for food.
Bang.
Keil. That smart ar-A whisper interrupts my thoughts. It is so silent I barely heard it.
'Such a shame,' It whispered. 'Only one can win. Oh well.' I hear sarcasm and glee in the voice.
The voice that belonged to May.
I sat up, grabbed my dagger with my left hand, rolled over and drew my hand down. Screams pierced the night. I remove the dagger, yet plunge it in again. Blood poured out. I pushed her shoulder and looked at May's face. The once innocent, cheery girl was now pale and evil, glaring at me with blazing green eyes.
'Stupid Abigail, why not let me kill her?' She said sarcasticly. I knew she was dying. Slowly.
'Besides, there can only be one winner.'
'And Madeline deserves to be that winner.' I reply. May lets out a sharp laugh, yet stops as blood fills her mouth.
'Madeline? That stupid, cheery, happy, oh-so-sweet dumb girl? Stupid, Abigail.' She moans, still glaring at me.
'Stupid, stupid Abigail. Stupid...Abigail....' She sings, the false moon illuminating her mean, devilish expression. Drops of blood poured out from her full mouth, over her cheeks and staining her clothes. She mummers a little longer, before stopping entirely. She didn't blink. She was gone. I put my hand over her face, as a sign of respect, I guess. Why? I hated her! Yet I felt like I had to, for Maddy. She was still asleep- the tetanus medicine was extra drowsy. I pull May away from her, and blood pours onto the dirt, creating a trail.
Monster.
Murderer.
Survivor.
Protecter.
Evil.
Merciless.
Were all words that described me, I thought, as I watched the Hovercraft take the body. Hopefully all the tributes were alive, not in body, but spirit. With the Lord. If there is one, I think as a tear slides down my face. He would have stopped this. Helped us stop this mess. I hold my head high towards the moon, letting it show the blood that stained my face. I stand there, before slinking back into the shadows, falling into a empty sleep.Authors note:
Awwwwwww yeahhhhhhhh!!!! I knew May was trouble when she walked in! -Taylor Swift Parody. I waited ages to write this! Now the Careers have the upper hand- literally- and we find out May is a rotten, dirty, cheating, and quite crazy girl. Comments on this new turn!
