The friendship that existed between Garroth and Laurance had gotten rockier after the original argument. At work, they barely spoke to each other. At home, they barely made eye contact. It was weird for the both of them, being so removed and closed off from the other.
It was necessary.
At least that's what Garroth told himself when the silence became too much and his room was too suffocating. Sometimes those words kept him from breaking down. No one needed to know that though. No one needed to know just how much this was hurting him.
It was just about a week after the initial argument when something came along and changed everything up. It came in two parts.
It started with a red-haired, blue-eyed woman. She showed up with a smile and a suit case, looking like she had been through hell and back. Garroth wasn't sure what to make of her when he opened the door. "I'm looking for Laurance Zvahl," she said it so simply, like no other information would be needed to explain her sudden appearance.
"I'm sorry, who are you?"
"I'm Cadenza Zvahl, Laurance's sister."
Garroth must've looked so confused in that moment because Cadenza spoke once more. "Did he ever mention me?"
"Not that I can remember," Garroth answered. "Just, come in and take a seat. I'll call Laurance and see where he's at."
Cadenza didn't hesitate as she made her way over to the couch, smiling at Garroth as she passed him. Garroth didn't think too much as he went to get his phone, immediately calling Laurance. After only a few seconds, he picked up. "Hey, Laurance?"
"Is something wrong?"
"I don't know, this girl just got here and she's saying she's your sister. Was I supposed to just somehow know you've got a sister or were you ever going to tell me?"
"I didn't think it was important."
"Just come home, she's your sister not mine."
"What did she say her name was? I wanna make sure she's not lying."
"Cadenza Zvahl, red hair and blue eyes. She looks way too much like you to be lying."
"Okay, I'll be there in a few minutes."
Laurance finally made it back twenty minutes later, which is much more than just a 'few minutes'. When he saw Cadenza lounging on the couch, calmly talking to Garroth, he froze. It had been a few years since he's seen her. He didn't want to believe she would actually be in his home, but there she was.
Cadenza spotted him before he had the chance to say anything, her face lighting up. "Laurance!" She was up and hugging him before he could even react, her grip tight and her smile unbelievably wide. "Man! I've missed you so fucking much!" She pulled away and looked at him, a stray tear rolling down her cheek. "God, I can't believe you're still so short! And you dyed your hair! Little Laur has changed so much!"
As Laurance tried to get Cadenza to stop teasing him, Garroth was sat there awkwardly watching the siblings reunite.
"As much as I love seeing you again, why are you here?" Laurance asked.
"When you first moved out, you said I could stay with you whenever I needed to. I just need to stay here for just one night," Cadenza said, her answer seeming just a bit too rehearsed. Laurance didn't question it though, the joy of seeing his sister again trumped any sort of suspicion he could've had.
"You can stay on the couch, if that's the case." Laurance grinned. "You can leave whenever you need to."
Cadenza simply thanked him, her smile not exactly reaching her eyes this time.
