(Y/N) was sitting on the balcony, staring at the city with a glass of wine in their hands. The past few days were boring and unbelievably slow. There was nothing for them to do, no where for them to go.

The balcony was becoming one of their favorite places to spend their time, other than the roof of the building. Anywhere where they weren't cooped up was quickly becoming their favorite place to be.

Lately, they'd been feeling very lost and unfocused. They weren't able to get their priorities or thoughts aligned, no matter how hard they tried. It was taking a toll on how they acted towards everyone. They were distant, a bit too rude, and irrational. Everyone pretended to not notice, not wanting to worsen whatever was going on.

After a few days of snide remarks, eye rolls, and pointless arguments, Aaron finally decided he'd had enough. He approached (Y/N) that evening while they looked over the balcony. The only acknowledgement he got was a slight nod of the head. Aaron stood next to them, looking at them as their eyes remained unfocused on the bustling city.

Aaron was aware that (Y/N) was beautiful, he always has been. In that moment something about them seemed absolutely ethereal. Their perfectly messy (h/c) hair was being blown out of their face by the wind, letting Aaron get a view of their delicate (s/c) skin and glazed (e/c) eyes. Instead of the wonderful, bright smile Aaron was used to, there was only a frown. It killed Aaron to see (Y/N) like this.

The wine glass in (Y/N)'s hands was held loosely, a simple breeze could've sent it crashing to the street below. They didn't care. "Here to give me another lecture?" They asked the question with an unmatchable disinterest, their voice flat and piercing.

"No."

"Then why're you here?"

"To check up on you," Aaron said, stepping just a but closer. "Everything has been stressful recently and you're taking it the hardest. You do know that no one faults you for anything, right? We're all worried for you. I want you to know I hate seeing you when you're like this."

(Y/N) turned to face Aaron, putting the glass down on a table. "Like what?"

Aaron gestured vaguely toward the sky, a way of saying 'I don't know'. "You stop acting like you. You never talk to anyone and when anyone tries to talk to you, you act unnecessarily bitchy. You used to never drink and now I can always find you with a cup of something alcoholic. (Y/N), you're nothing like the person I thought I knew." The last line came out much more quiet and weak

"Things change."

"Yeah, but never this quickly." There was an underlying tone of desperation in Aaron's voice as he spoke. He wanted (Y/N) to hear the unsaid plea in his voice, to pick up on all that he wasn't saying. There were promises and confessions hidden in just one sentence.

(Y/N) sighed, "I don't get why you care this much."

Well, that was all it took for Aaron to get rid of any pride he had and to finally say the truth.

"Oh my fucking God, (Y/N). I love you. I have for a while! Of course I'm going to care when you're acting like you're always two seconds away from ending it all! And I know this is stupid and horribly timed, but I just-" Aaron trailed off, his face a spectacular shade of red. He looked away from (Y/N), turning his attention to the floor.

A few seconds of silence and stillness passed before Aaron felt (Y/N) hold his hand. They didn't say anything at first. Aaron didn't know if it was shock or embarrassment stopping them. God how he hoped they'd just say something, anything.

"I-I love you too."

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Fuck."

(Y/N) smiled. It was small and it would've went unnoticed if Aaron wasn't paying so much attention to them.

It was close to being perfect, so fucking close. But (Y/N)-

(Y/N) began crying. It started off small, contained. It quickly evolved into something closer to bawling. It was unexpected and Aaron had no idea what to do other than to hug them, to pull them close.

"It's okay." Aaron whispered this to (Y/N) repeatedly, faintly remembering his sister doing the same for him when he was much younger. "Everything'll be okay."

Aaron doesn't quite know how long he held (Y/N) as they cried, but he did know how much every single second of it crushed him. He wanted to help them, to do something more, but he didn't know how.

"I'm so sorry," (Y/N) said, wiping the remaining tears from their eyes. "That was really sudden and unexpected and- well, I don't know. Sorry."

"You don't need to apologize, you didn't do anything wrong. Plus, y'know, I'd do just about anything to help you."

(Y/N) looked at Aaron, this special look in their beautiful (e/c) eyes that made his heart do gymnastics in his chest.

"Thank you."
