“You’re an idiot; a huge fucking idiot.” That was the first sentence I heard when I came to, and who was the caring one speaking? Carson, my oh so lovely brother. I groaned in pain as a response. I had a headache and he wasn’t helping.
“Mom, I think she’s waking up.” Kenzie practically yelled, and I bet she did that on purpose. The little brat hates me, so why wouldn’t she?
“Carson, go get the doctor.” My mom whispered, hallelujah for considerate mothers.
I finally opened my eyes and was shocked to see not just my family in my room. Connor, Nolan, and Owen were surprisingly here as well. I should feel happy that they came to see me, but I was so embarrassed about all that has happened. I didn’t want to see my family’s disapproving glares. I don’t need to add three more to that list. Plus, I had a feeling if they stayed in here while the doctor was here, they’d learn about my secret. I groaned again. F my life.
“What the hell were you thinking, young lady?” My mother stepped in front of my view of my three and only friends.
“I wasn’t?” My statement came out as more of a question.
“That’s right, you weren’t! God, you are so grounded. Maybe you aren’t responsible and mature enough to handle public school anymore. I’m pulling you out! I’m bolting your windows shut. Hell, I’m even putting a lock on your door that was only I can open it! You’ll be lucky if I let you experience outside in a few years. God, I swear I raised you smarter than this.” My mother ranted. My face flushed in embarrassment as I cautiously looked over at my friends. They seemed to have gotten the message and existed the room.
“Mom, I’m sorry, but you can’t do that! First off, I’m seventeen and I’m legally allowed to leave next year, so you can’t keep me locked in my room for years. Secondly, taking me out of school isn’t going to benefit anyone! I’d be depressed again if I had to deal with online schooling again. Thirdly, I accept the grounding, but you sure as hell aren’t bolting my window shut and locking me in my room!”
“I sure as hell am. And, on top of that I’m putting bars on the window. That’ll teach you to give your family a heart attack.”
“You’re impossible!” I yelled in frustration.
“No, that’s you! God, we thought someone kidnapped you! Turns out my idiotic daughter just decided to leave all her stuff at school and walk twenty miles away. What if your body decided to reject your donor heart now?”
“Then I’d fucking die, which I’d rather do than live life like I’ll die of heart failure at any second. I’m a teenager! I want to do stupid stuff and never think about the effects of my actions. I want to live, and you guys aren’t letting me.”
“What teenager leaves school and walks twenty miles?!” She screamed in frustration now, too.
“An upset and confused one, that’s what!”
“Is this about a boy?”
“God, mother, you’re ridiculous. I did this, because I chose to. I was upset because of a fight I had with a friend. I was irrational and just left. The walking twenty miles was to try and find someone who could help.”
“So it was a boy! Well, guess what? You’re not allowed to date or even interact with boys.”
“Just shut up! You can’t choose who my friends are, and ALL of my friends are boys. So you want your daughter to lose all her friends? I was the stupid one, not them. And if I want to date, I will!”
“Like hell you will!”
We were full out screaming at each other when a throat was cleared causing us to look towards the open door. Carson and the doctor were standing there. How embarrassing.
“Excuse me, Mrs. Stevens, but I need to speak with Evelyn and discuss what has happened.” The doctor awkwardly walked into the room.
“Okay, go ahead. We’ll just finish our little chat later.” She gave him a weary smile.
The doctor asked me the regular follow up questions, which I passed with flying colors.
“Now, Evelyn what you did was irresponsible. You were extremely dehydrated and exhausted. Those are not the ideal conditions for anyone let alone a girl with a heart transplant. If you don’t change and make good decisions, you’ll lose this heart too. Thankfully, your heart is still working just fine.” The doctor smiled warmly at me and then left.
“Evelyn, what the hell-“ Carson started speaking, but I cut him off.
“Will you both leave? Bring in my friends on your way out. I’m not in the mood for a lecture or fight right now.” I sighed in exasperation. Thankfully, they complied.
“Evelyn!” Nolan threw himself at me. I laughed lightly and hugged him back. I moved over some and allowed him to sit next to me on the hospital bed.
“Eve.” Connor spoke, and his voice broke. It looked like it physically hurt him to see me in this position. Tears swelled in my eyes at the utter hurt on his face. I opened my arms, and he threw his self into my hug.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered in his ear, he returned my apology and hung onto me for dear life.
“Don’t scare me like that ever again.” Connor frowned at me.
“I won’t, I promise.” I patted his back, and then moved over some so he could fit on the hospital bed. I don’t know how, but we all three fit.
“E-Bear.” Owen whispered. He looked conflicted. While I could tell he was relieved, I also saw hurt, anger, and concern on his face.
“O-o Bear.” A sob escaped my lips and tears streamed down my face. This is what I wanted to happen yesterday before I passed out. I was also upset that I had caused them all pain.
Surprising me, and everyone else, Owen climbed up on the bed and hovered over me. He grabbed my face lightly in his hands and kissed away each of my tears. This caused even more to fall. Finally, he kissed me smack on the lips.
Owen freaking Forbes kissed me, and I swear I heard my heart monitor go erratic.
I hope this was a good chapter. They kissed while being sandwiched between Connor and Nolan, which may have been a little awkward for all of them, but oh well. Next chapter will talk about how Evelyn was found. Also, i wont be updating for a bit. Comments and Likes will speed up my updating process (hint hint), but i need to write two more chapters for my other book. I've been neglecting it, so until that's done don't expect a new chapter.
