“Hey, Evelyn.” Connor plopped his happy self down on the bench across from mine. I was sitting at a picnic table waiting for Nolan to show up for the day. School is supposed to start in ten minutes, and Nolan texted saying he’d be here in five.
“Hey, Connie. Where’s Owen?” I smiled up at him. I tightened my scarf around my neck as I waited for his reply.
“He had a dentist appointment this morning. He told me to tell you to not miss him too much until he gets here.” Connor shot me a cheeky grin.
“ How will I ever accomplish that?” I sighed dramatically, placing a hand over my heart. Connor laughed in response.
We were both quiet for a minute. I was studying some notes that went over content that would be on my math test later today. I knew I’d pass with flying colors. My online class had already covered this topic before I switched to public school. Connor was playing on his phone, and with the frown on his face I knew it wasn’t something happy.
“What’s up?” I kicked my foot out lightly and tapped Connor’s foot causing him to look up at me.
“Nothing.” He frowned even more.
“What’s with the sad face?” I mimicked his frown.
“Just this… girl.” He mumbled under his breath.
“I know how to solve your problem!” I beamed at him.
“Oh, really?” He gave me a incredulous look.
“Oh, totally! Get a new plaything, Connie.”
“And who should I interview for the job as my ‘plaything.’” He raised an eyebrow up at me.
“Oh, I don’t know, but I think you should get something serious instead.”
“With who?”
“Nolan.” Connor got a look of surprise on his face before sending me a glare.
“Funny.” His glare became darker.
“I’m serious, Connor. Nolan likes you.”
“I don’t swing that way.”
“You never know until you try.”
“You know what? I can’t be with Nolan and I don’t particularly want to be friends with you.” His grip on his phone tightened so much that his knuckles turned white.
“Connor…” I trailed off as tears gathered in my eyes. He’s one of my only friends. I was actually enjoying his company.
“You just don’t know when to drop things, Evelyn. I can’t fucking leave my ‘plaything’ for Nolan, because my ‘plaything’ right now is Nolan! And I want to fucking be with him, but I can’t. Nolan wants me to be out of the closet and open about our relationship and I can’t fucking do that. I’m an asshole who can’t do anything.” Connor started ranting. His face was beet red as he almost yelled at me. When he finally realized what he said, his face became pale white.
“Connor.” I gasped.
“Forget everything you just heard.” With that, Connor stomped away leaving me flabbergasted.
Who knew I was infuriating enough to get some information out of that mysterious boy?
