Connor and Nolan decided that they were going to come by for another impromptu visit about five minutes after my Dad chased Owen off with his shotgun. I didn’t miss the disapproving look he gave me when two more boys walked through the door. I just mouthed, “they’re dating,” and he let us be.

“I hate him so much. He’s such a fucking dick.” Connor was complaining about Owen. Apparently earlier today at school, Owen had avoided him, and when it was time to leave, Owen left without him in their shared car. Nolan ended up giving him a ride and they came here.

“You don’t hate him.” I shook my head at Connor and gave him a disapproving look.

“God, I don’t even get how you could like a prick like him!” Connor let out a noise of frustration.

“Well, if you understood, then that’d be incest.” Nolan hit me upside the back of the head for that one.

“I’m serious, Eve. How can you like a guy like him? You deserve better.” Connor sighed. His comment made me angry, but I decided to handle it like a champ.

“I’ve always wanted the type of guy who could think I’m perfect even when I’m not. I wanted a guy who would just look at me when I’m screaming and pissed at him, and just think ‘She’s all mine and I’ve never been luckier.’ Even when I’m showing him all the reasons he has to hate me, he still can only see the ones that make him love me. I wanted a guy who would just grab my face mid rant and kiss me to shut me up, and then say that he loves me or agree to whatever insignificant thing I’m angry about, because all that matters to him is me. For some reason, my gut’s telling me Owen’s that guy for me.” Nolan let out a little ‘aw’ and Connor lost some of his anger.

“What if your gut’s wrong?” Connor questioned.

“Then I’ll be heartbroken, but the time spent with him would have been worth it.”

“That’s how I feel about you, Connor. It’s why I was so dead set on you coming out before we started dating. I didn’t want just half of you, I wanted all of you.” Nolan blushed and avoided Connor’s eyes.

Wait, does that mean Connor came out to the whole school?” My eyes widened.

“Well, he screaming at Owen and accidentally said ‘you can’t ignore me, because I’m gay,’ like really loudly. He figured the whole school knew by lunch time so he kissed me in front of the whole cafeteria and asked me to be his boyfriend.”

“And you said?”

“No, obviously.” Nolan rolled his eyes. “Of course I squealed and said yes.”

“Connor, you do realize Owen’s not upset because you’re gay, right?”

“Yeah, I know. I was just being a dick.” Connor sighed.

“He’ll come around, I promise. Just right now he feels betrayed by the one person he trusted more than life itself.”

“I didn’t mean for this to happen, Eve.”

“I know you didn’t, Connie, but that doesn’t mean Owen wanted it to either.”

“What can I do to make it better?”

“Apologize and stop fighting with him. Be the brother he thinks he’s lost.” Connor nodded, and Nolan smiled warmly at me.

If only they knew, the guilt of my secret was eating me alive. They trusted me, and I was keeping a life or death situation a secret from them. It’s only a matter of time before I lost them for good.

Short because i'm going to universal, sorry
