“The worst part of it all is that he actually thought I’d disown him for who he is.” Owen put his head in his hands and sighed. We had left my house and walked to a nearby park. Owen was sitting on a swing to my right, and I was standing on the other swing.
“He was scared and thinking irrationally.” I was trying to mend things between them, since I could see how both sides have a point.
“But we’ve always told each other everything. He knows my deepest, darkest secrets, and yet he couldn’t even show me the real him.” I sat down on the swing so I could reach over and squeeze Owen’s arm in comfort.
“We all have reasons to keep secrets, O-Bear.”
“I wish we didn’t.”
“Well, how about we forget about this mess for a second. You need to calm down, so you can think more rationally about everything.”
“What should we do?”
“You tell me a secret, and I’ll tell you one. Like you said earlier, I’m a girl you just met. Let’s get to know each other better.” I smiled at him, and he returned it.
“When I was four, I flashed a girl in my daycare class.” I burst out laughing, and Owen’s smile widened while his cheeks got a little pink.
“Which end?”
“You don’t want to know.” I laughed louder when he blushed even darker.
“Way to bring out the big leagues on the first go.”
“I thought I should be the one to tell you, since I know someone will blab. Your turn, and make it juicy.” He sent me a cheeky grin.
“Okay, um… When I was seven my mom told me I couldn’t touch a certain cabinet. So, like every curious child, I went and grabbed this clear bottle of what looked like water out of the specific place I wasn’t allowed to touch. It turned out to be vodka and my mom came home to find a drunk seven year old and fired our babysitter. I was grounded for a month.” Owen let out a small chuckle.
“Ever the rebel, Miss. Evelyn.”
“You know it.” I winked at him.
“I cheated on one of my exs, which I know sounds bad, but I honestly thought she knew we were over. I told her that we couldn’t see each other anymore and she took it, as we need to keep our relationship out of public eyes. She walked in on me making out with one of her friends.”
“Oh that poor, naïve girl.”
“I felt so bad that I got her three dozen roses and a box of gummy bears as an apology gift, and she took it as a ‘I’m so sorry lets get back together’ thing. We dated for a month after that, because I couldn’t bring myself to break her heart again.”
“Oh poor you.” I patted his cheek, and pouted at him. I held back a laugh when I heard him mumble shut up under his breath.
“I helped a boy cheat on his girlfriend. I was uh, on vacation, and I met a really cute boy. We talked and kissed a few times before his girlfriend showed up. I felt so bad that I made Carson kiss her to make up for my mistake. They ended up dating after that.” To be honest, I met him at the children’s wing of the hospital. Turns out he was visiting his sick girlfriend, I spit in the scumbag’s food when he wasn’t looking after that.
“So, we’re both horrible people.”
“Indeed.” We both smiled from ear to ear.
“I met a girl and I think I really like her.” My smile dropped. Owen noticed, so I cleared my throat and looked away.
“I want to meet her one day. Any girl that can make Owen Forbes fall at her feet is pretty amazing.”
“She is pretty and amazing, but you can’t meet her.”
“What, why?”
“Because you already know her.”
“Really? What’s her name?”
“Evelyn.”
“Wait, she has my name?”
“I swear you really are blonde some times, E-Bear. You are the pretty and amazing girl that I like.” I looked over at Owen and leaned in to softly kiss his lips.
“You are something else, Mr. Forbes.”
“And you are something special, Miss. Stevens.”
We kissed for a few minutes before a pain in my chest made me pull away. I couldn’t catch my breath, and I was freaking out.
“What’s wrong?” Owen grabbed my face in his hands. His concerned eyes met mine.
“I can’t do this.”
“Why?”
“You make it to where I can’t breathe.” I pulled away to get some space. It helped bring air into my lungs.
“And that scares you?”
“It brings back old memories.”
“Well, it’s your lucky day. I’m certified in CPR, babe.” Owen winked, and I couldn’t help but laugh.
I could finally breathe again, and my smile was back tenfold. Maybe I could be with Owen. Maybe my heart condition doesn’t matter anymore. Maybe, it’s become just a thing of my past. I can’t live in fear of my memories for the rest of my life.
I hope this chapter makes up for the shitty last one (which i might go back and rewrite) and the long wait. Also, this is the scene i made up to go along with the description WHICH HAD A TYPO BUT I DIDN'T NOTICE BECAUSE I NEVER READ MY DESCRIPTIONS AFTER I MAKE THEM AND NO ONE TOLD ME AND WOW IM AN IDIOT SOMETIMES.
Teaser Alert:
The whole not being able to breathe thing MIGHT have just been a panic attack.
