Chapter 14

Ashton

I turned my back on Belle as I slowly made my way out of the arena. Sasha was still clinging onto my arm and had that sly smile etched onto her face. I gave my best for her to have fun, I owed each of them that much, but I didn’t put my heart into it.

How could I? When the girl I had my sights on was probably avoiding me by now, just because I couldn’t figure out what I wanted.

“Ash, are you listening to me?” Sasha suddenly chirped, stunning me out of the train of thoughts that heaved onto my consciousness.

“I’m sorry, you were saying?” I asked, offering her my best smile as I turned to face her.

She pouted at me as she turned around. “What’s the point in me repeating it if you won’t be listening to what I say anyway?” She asked, but her words were merely a whisper.

“I’m sorry. You’ve got my attention, really.” I smiled again, giving my best not to simply send her away on her own.

She shook her head and pouted for a second. “You know who has your attention? Isabelle does. I think you should talk to her, Ash, not me.” She finally said after a pause.

She tried to let go of my hand, but I held on. “Why would you say that?” I asked with a grimace. I knew she was right, but I still wanted to know.

She gave a nervous laugh and looked at me as if I was out of my mind. “You’ve been looking at her the whole evening ever since she suddenly turned out of the blue with the Alpha. And when she jumped down I had a feeling you might rip Becky apart. You haven’t listened to one word I’ve said the whole night and constantly have a faraway look in your eyes.” She rolled her eyes at me. “I’m not stupid, Ash.”

I sighed and closed my eyes. “I’m sorry for ruining the evening for you.” I mumbled a half hearted apology I gave only because I was obliged to take her out. And that didn’t mean I had to be an ass while with her.

She offered me a weak smile and finally parted our hands. “Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. I guess I’ll see you around then.” I simply stood there as I watched her walk away, feeling rather lost in my confusion.

The evening was everything but ordinary. The Alpha cancelling the dinner is something that had happened before. But for one to be rejected by one of the girls had never happened before. I chuckled at the irony of the situation I found myself in.

“Ashton!” I heard a voice calling for me. I was tempted to ignore it, but still turned to face the man calling for me. “We need you. There is an urgent meeting of the Alphas, we need to decide what to do with the girl.” The head Alpha said, looking at me with concerned eyes.

I nodded shortly. “I’ll be there. Where is the meeting?” I whispered, shocked at how dead my voice sounded.

“We are meeting in the Alpha lounge.” He said, looking at me with concern. “Are you okay, Ashton? You don’t look too good.”

“I’m fine sir.” I replied with the best smile I could master at the time. Luckily it didn’t look like a grimace.

“I noticed you like our Belle.” The Alpha said out of blue as we were walking towards our destination. I was taken aback, not really knowing what to answer.
