"so, tell me about yourself, lady y/n. how did you find yourself to join the avengers?" thor asked, seeming genuinely interested.
i bit my lip. anything associated with 'myself' might as well have been pulled straight out of a horror story. but, i had to tell him something. avoiding the question would only make him more curious, which was definitely not what i needed.
okay, y/n. spare the gruesome details about yourself. you don't want to scare the beautiful man away. just make something up. you can sprinkle in some wholesome, true details. just be careful.
"i was born into a poor family, and grew up in boston. once i was eighteen, i joined the army. a few years as a soldier, and then i was transferred to the shield division. i moved up the ranks quickly, and became acquainted with agent coulson and nick fury, who i assume you know. after working under them for a while, they realized i could predict danger, and asked me to join the avengers."
a pang of guilt resonated through me. bits and pieces of what i had said was true, but mostly- it was all part of a fake narrative. a fake life without pain and sorrow. a perfect life. but that kind of life i could never have; it was taken from me years ago.
glancing up at thor's face, he shot me a smile before asking another question, "how long have you known you could predict danger?"
i hesitated in opening my mouth. telling him how it really happened, and being honest for once for once was a death wish. thank god i have some imagination, otherwise making up all these shitty fake narratives would be impossible.
i sighed, and grasped my hands behind my back as we walked. my fingers twiddled around each other as i started to speak, "i was seven, i think? at school, we played this game, capture the flag, and—"
"wait, i'm terribly sorry for interrupting, but what is this capture the flag you speak of?"
i stifled a laugh. i forgot he wasn't exactly familiar with life on earth yet. it was cute in its own dopey way.
"it's a game we have here," i explained. "it's pretty simple. there are two teams, and each team has a base that holds their flag. the teams have to try and steal the opposite team's flag, and bring it back to their own base. whoever can do that first wins."
"i understand," he nodded slightly, a small smile dawning on his face. it was clear life on earth fascinated him. "that sounds quite enjoyable. please, continue."
"so, usually before each round begins, the teams try to come up with some strategy to steal the flag. when my team was huddled, i somehow felt that the other team was planning something bad. it was just like i could tell it was going to happen, but i couldn't quite pinpoint what exactly. as it turns out, they decided to throw these thick, rubber balls called dodgeballs at us in order to storm our base."
i chuckled to myself before continuing, "honestly, it was pretty sad how quickly our team went down. but, what can i say, dodgeballs are pretty deadly weapons for a bunch of little kids."
he laughed with me. it was a booming sound that reverberated off the walls and deep through my chest. the deliciously peach humps of his lips sang symphonies in my heart when he laughed. oh, god, why did he have to be this gullible and so damn pretty?
i felt pure happiness just at his contagious smile, but dread dug out a home in the pits of my stomach that i tried to ignore. lying to everyone else was somewhat bearable, so why was it so awful with him?
my head spiraled with the questions, while i looked perfectly quaint on the outside. how long would it be until someone found me out? it took ravana a sideways glance, and boom— he had read me like a book instead of the locked vault i prefer to keep my heart personified as. it was heartbreaking the way i call these people my friends when all i do is lie to them. but there was no way i could stop now.
it was better this way. for them and me.
i continued to laugh along with thor. i would ignore the nervous butterflies hiccuping up my throat for an escape and continued to lie. the way it should be.
