"Do you think he'll try and talk to me?" I ask Heather. We're up in her room and I'm scared to back to school tomorrow morning and face Cole.
"I don't know. He normally doesn't blow up like that, plus he was drunk I don't know if he'll even remember it." She says.
"I guess." I say with a shrug.
"I mean do you want him to talk to you?" She asks.
"No. I mean maybe. I don't know." I admit.
"Do you like him or something?" She asks.
"What. No way... I mean maybe. I don't know anymore." I say putting my head in my hands.
"That's ok Allie. I get it, he's hot and damaged. But he's also a bit of a jerk. And a lot of work." She tells me.
"I know, I know. I just think he needs someone and for some reason I want to be that person." I say.
"You really care about him don't you?" Heather asks.
"Yeah I think I do." I tell her honestly.
"So you forgive him?" She asks.
"No." I say honestly again.
"So you care about him but your pissed at him?" She asks.
"Exactly. Oh god what's wrong with me." I say.
"Nothing. You like an asshole it's ok." Heather says with a laugh, before we know it we're both laughing. Heather falls off the bed.
"Are you ok Heather?" Her Dad asks opening the door.
"Yeah." She tells him still laughing. He sees me.
"Oh, who's your friend?" He asks.
"I'm Alison, but call me Allie." I say getting up to shake her dad's hand.
"Nice to meet you." He says. I nods and walks back over to me.
"Do you wanna stay for dinner Allie?" Her dad asks.
"Oh no thank you I should be getting home." I say.
"I'll drive you." Heather offers.
"Thanks." I say. Heather drops me home and I walk back into the house.
"Did you have fun?" My mom asks.
"Yeah I love Heather she's the best." I tell her.
"She's lovely honey." My mom agrees.
"You should go to bed soon dear, you have a test tomorrow." My dad says walking in.
"I will dad." I tell him. My phone rings, Cole. I hang up. All through dinner my phone rings and buzzed from calls and texts from Cole. I don't know read them I just hit delete.
I try my best to avoid Cole in my way into school, so far so good. I'm sitting in English class now talking to Heather when Cole comes over.
"Can we talk?" He asks.
"I have nothing to say to you." I tell him.
"Allie please." He says.
"Back off Cole." Heather snaps. He goes to say more but the teacher walks in and starts talking about hamlet so Cole has to sit down. I'm left thinking if I should hear him out or not. After class I walk up to him.
"Look I don't want to talk about it. You didn't know so it's ok." I tell him.
"I'm really sorry." He apologizes.
"I know." I say trying to smile.
"I don't know why I was such a dick. The pool thing was a joke and I didn't mean the slut thing. I swear." He says.
"Why'd you say it?" I ask curiously.
"What?" He ask a little taken back.
"Well I don't know if you noticed but the only guys I've even talked to since I moved here are you and on under the circumstances Kyle." I point out.
"Well it's not like I pay attention to that shit." He defense himself.
"Are you really defending your actions right now?" I ask shocked and disappointed.
"What? Ok now your just picking s fight." He says.
"That's ridiculous." I snap.
"Is it? Because I was actually apologizing and somehow you made it a fight." He says coldly.
"Me? Oh that's rich. It was your rude comments." I fire back at him. He shrugs and takes a spray can out of his bag. He starts tagging the wall. I just stare.
"Run along now." He says. I try to get the van away from him but sprays me with it.
"Cole! Must you ruin all my clothes!" I yell and him, he just starts laughing at me.
"You two!" A teacher yells down the hall.
"Run!" Cole yells grading my hand and dropping the spray can.
"You can drop my hand." I snap as we run. He does, I can't believe this I'm gonna be in so much trouble and I didn't do anything. I don't know why I'm running I wasn't the one who did anything it was Cole, but still I follow him as he runs. He goes right out the door to a black car.
"Get in." He says getting in the drivers seat.
"What?" I ask, this is too crazy for me. I see the same teacher running after us.
"Get in Allie." Cole says again. Even though I shouldn't, the cameras will show I did nothing I still get in the car. He drives off with the teacher yelling after us. Cole is laughing, like actually laughing not that fake laugh he does all the time.
"Are you crazy? You could expelled and arrested." I point out.
"We." He corrects me.
"No, I didn't do anything." I disagree.
"You ran with me and you have paint on you." He says.
"So, the hall had cameras. I'll be fine." I tell him.
"Allie that was east hall, the cameras don't work there. Kyle broke them last week that's why he's suspended." He tells me, my face goes white. They won't believe me if I say I didn't do anything, the cameras in the other halls can show me talking and walking with Cole since I've been here. Oh god what if they think I'm one of his crime crew.
"I'm screwed and running makes it worse. Oh god." I say under my breath. Cole looks at me and he turns around, what is he doing. He pulls back into the school lot, the police are here with the teacher who saw us.
"That's the car!" She yells pointing. Cole and I get out of the car, he puts his hands up I do the same. The police officer walks over to us.
"It was all me officer Clark. Allie was trying to stop me. She run because I pulled her along." Cole says.
"Why should I believe that Cole?" The officer asks.
"Come on you know me. When do I ever come back to the crime." Cole tells him.
"This is a first. Alright." He says.
"Cole why'd you do that?" I ask. He just shrugs.
"Cole you know how this works. Turn around." The cop says, hand cuffs in his hands.
"Yeah I know." Cole says as the officer cuffs him.
"Wait what? Is he going to juvenile detention?" I ask the officer.
"I'm eighteen Allie." Cole says as the officer puts him in the cop car.
"What?" I ask a little panicked. Cole is eighteen, that means he's going to jail for vandalism. The car drives off, he turned around so I wouldn't get in trouble. Oh shit.
I walk into my Dad's office, he's typing away at something.
"Hey Dad." I say.
"Hey sweetheart. Did you need something?" He asks not looking up form his computer.
"Can I borrow your car?" I ask.
"Yeah sure." He says. I don't bother saying anything else because I know he was only partly listening to me. I just take the keys and go, I wrote s note Incase he forgets he let me us the car then I'm off. I'm surprised at how small the police station is here, though I probably shouldn't be it's a small town.
"Hi, are visiting hours open still?" I ask the man at the desk.
"Yeah. Who you trying to see?" He asks.
"Cole Venna." I say.
"You need to sign in and I need some ID." He says. I do what he asks and he prints me a visitor pass. I sit on a stool in front of a thick glass pan with a phone on the wall. An officer brings Cole over in the other side of the glass.
"Allie?" He mouths clearly surprised to see me. I pick up the phone.
"How much trouble did I get you in?" I ask.
"You didn't, I got myself in this." He says.
"Cole you and I both know you only turned around so I wouldn't get in trouble." I call him out.
"Nah, I just didn't want to take tomorrow's math test." He tries to tell me as fact. Lier, I can see it.
"Why do you do that?" I ask, I feel this uncomfortable need to know.
"Do What?" He says trying to cover his tracks.
"Cole, don't act like you don't know what I mean. Why do you act like you don't give a shit." I tell him. He runs a hand over his face and I notice his prison uniform is short sleeve, he has makes all over his arms. They look like scars.
"Allie if you came here to annoy me leave." He says.
"Cole. What happened to your arms?" I ask him.
"Nothing." He says quickly moving his position so I can't see his skin anymore.
"Cole-" I say trying to get him to talk but he cuts me off.
"Officer, I'd like to leave now." He says to the man behind him, he still has the phone near his mouth so I hear him. The man nods and walks Cole back, damn it. I'm worried about Cole, it's all I can think about in the drive home. I want to go back and see him tomorrow but I don't know if he'll even see me. I guess all I can do is go back and hope he will.
I walk back up to the man at the desk of the police station and go through the same thing again. I wait at the glass to see if Cole will show. It's looking like he won't when he walks up and sits on the other side.
"I was afraid you wouldn't see me." I say through the phone.
"I was considering it." He admits to me.
"Look I'm sorry, I'm just....." I try to tell him but I cut myself off.
"You what?" He asks softly. It's the first time I've heard his voice not in a rough, tough guy way.
"I care about you. I worry about you." I tell him as softly as he said to me.
"Don't." He says the roughness back to his voice.
"Why?" I ask. I'm scared of the answer he might give me.
"Because you'll hurt yourself." He tells me.
"That's my choice." I say putting my hand on the glass.
"When you said you cared about me, what did you mean?" He asks. I know he wants to know if I'm into him and I think I am but I have a hard time showing it.
"I don't know. I just know I do." I tell him.
"Alright. That's ok." He says putting his hand on the glass too.
"How long are you here for?" I ask him.
"It shouldn't be too long it was a small crime. I'll be out in a few days." He says.
"Bail?" I ask.
"Yeah, not that my parents will pay it." He says.
"They want you to learn?" I ask.
"Something like that." He says.
"How much, maybe I can pay." I offer.
"No. I don't need help, it's ok." He says.
"Cole, let me help you. Please." I say, I really want him to let me in.
"Don't do that." He says.
"What?" I ask confused.
"Don't ask me to do something in that voice." He says.
"What voice? I was just talking." I say.
"You don't notice? You change your voice when you ask me to do something." He points out.
"Do I?" I ask for clarification.
"Yeah." He says. I think I blush a bit.
"Times up." A Officer tells me. One says the same to Cole.
"Looks like I have to go." I say.
"I'll be out in a few days, I'll see you then." He says, then he walks out of sight.
