Ruby stood at the starting line alongside the other examinees, stretching out her legs. Her gaze drifted over to Sakura, who gave her an undecipherable look before turning back to the bug-like girl she was talking to. She sighed.
'I can't believe we've already made an enemy and we haven't even gotten into UA yet.' Clem contemplated.
'I don't think she hates us.' Ruby tried to justify. 'She was probably just defensive over her friend. I'm sure she'll calm down, especially now Kaminari-kun has owned up. If she's still mad, we could go explain it to her.'
'That's probably it.' Sunila added. 'You sure you're okay doing this stage?'
'Yes, just stay close for when we switch.' She took off their hoodie, wrapping it around her waist.
"Alright!" Present Mic's voice boomed from the speakers. "Everyone behind the line, starting positions!"
Ruby knelt down in starting position, ready to kick off. Her eye began to glow, a bright red replacing the murky greenish blue. She pushed a stray curl of blond hair from her face, tucking it behind her ear. She'd tied Miyuki's hair up in a tight ponytail, but a few strands till framed the sides of her cheeks.
"Ready, set..."
She straightened.
"Go, go, go!"
She pushed off, running. The other contestants had already begun to falter at the start, scrambling to catch up. She tried to keep up her speed, but other quirk users easily passed her.
Her stamina, while inferior to Clem's quirk, was more than enough to carry them through the race.
The sides of the track were marked with white paint, standing out against the grass. It headed straight towards a treeline, prickly brambles and upturned roots visible from outside.
She saw a blur of pink out of the corner of her eye but refused to look back, instead angling her run to the side.
The buzz of electricity filled the air and Ruby barely managed to duck before a blue ball of lightning was hurled at her by Sakura from behind, sailing over her head. She sped up slightly.
Ruby dove into the small forest, watching the ground more carefully to avoid tripping. As she jumped, the guy with the mutant quirk passed her. He waved a grey cracked hand, seemingly made out of stone.
Another passed her, this time a young deer with glowing eyes and flowers trailing behind him. Sakura seemed to have been left behind, the constant humming of her electrified hair barely audible.
"Thirteen is now in pursuit!" Mic announced, startling Ruby and causing her to trip over a root, barely managing to catch herself. She stopped running and settled for a jog when she heard the shouts of the slower examinees, presumably caught by Thirteen. They sounded quite far away, so she wasn't concerned.
She instead focused in front where the two other students had paused at the first obstacle, the deer having changed back to the boy from early.
The ground opened up into a pit, looking like a monstrous void trying to swallow them whole. It stretched for about fifteen metres forward, with fences marking the sides off limits.
Seemingly the only two ways of getting across were the thin, unstable rock pillars scattered in the pit and the ropes hanging from one side to the other above them.
The deer boy wasted no time in changing, with a flash of green light, back into a deer and leaped across to the first pillar. It cracked beneath his hooves, but he leaped flawlessly to the next and the next, making his way across.
