I stared intently out my bedroom window, searching for any sign of movement in the awakening forest. None. I sighed as I gathered my auburn hair back into a messy ponytail and let my fringe hang down, the way I liked it. I threw on my uniform, while my mind was somewhere else, trying to pick up the pieces of what I saw.
As I grabbed the suculent ham sandwich from the tabletop, my mum wished me good luck for yet another glorious day of school. A smiled and waved dismissively with a mouth full of chewed sandwich and stepped out into the fresh autumn air. The sun was already bright, high in the sky. But, unfortunately, not bright enough to save my fingers from the bitter morning frost.
I heard the door slam shut behind me and footsteps broke the white frost on the stone.
"You know that was my sandwich," the girl informed me.
"Whatever!" I spat with a mouth of food, turning my head to face her with a scowl.
"Ew... Disgusting! That's no way to treat your sister."
I glared at her. "Finders keepers, Aurora." I gave her a smug smirk.
"Well you didn't fiiiind it, you stoooole it. But then again I guess you wouldn't know the difference."
Aurora returned the smirk and strutted along to the road. She turned and stared back, clearly proud of her joke. "Coming?"

Skateboarders, emos, athletes, nerds. The lot of them were spread out in all directions of the school yard. There was no escaping the ever-tightening grip of school.
As usual, Aurora had shimmied off somewhere, probably off to see her skater boy boyfriend. She got the looks in the family, the cute button nose, her long blonde hair, perfectly styled without much effort. But I don't envy her, I try not to stand out too much. I keep my wavy auburn hair back and don't wear much makeup, drawing little attention to myself. I stick with my two close friends, Katie and Luke, and that's enough for me.
As if on que Katie and Luke jogged up to my side, as if they had some interesting news, not that anything interesting happens in Willowcombe.
"You seen the new kid?" Luke asked, restyling his jet black hair.
"I'd be suprised if you haven't, he's not bad in the looks department." Katie had ginger hair, like me, and always wore it in plaits no matter what, she wears black glasses, which suit her as the cleverest girl in the school.
I searched the lively playground until I saw him, hunched over in the corner, one hand on his rucksack strap and the other in his pocket, obviously trying to draw little attention to himself. There was something about him. He seemed familiar, yet I was sure I'd never seen him before. But there was still something, something in his eyes, the way they stared at me. I've seen those eyes before.

He was just sat there, at the back at the class, barely making any effort to even move, let alone actually listen to Mr Wright. Without knowing why, he frustrated me, but then again I can't help but stare. His dirty blonde hair fell perfectly, and his scowling eyebrows made him seem somewhat of a bad boy, the kind that do what they want, when they want.
"What?" he inquired. His voice put me out of my daydream.
"Um... nothing. Hi, I'm Hanna."
"Logan." He stared inquisitively at me as if wondering why I was talking him, his attempt to go unnoticed had failed.
I gave him a weak smile and opened my mouth, about to speak, "Hanna!" Mr Wright called from the front of the classroom. "I know that knew pupils are fascinating things, but please face the front and pay attention." He stroked his wispy stubble and continued to blabble on about the Vietnam war.
I subtly turned around back to Logan, who was silently laughing at himself. Wow, he has emotions. Never would have guessed.
"Hanna, are you going to answer my question or not?" Mr Wright pondered.
"Um... sorry sir?"
"What year did the Vietnam war start?"
"Um... um... I don't know sir."
"Well, clearly some of us should pay more attention in class. Detention after school!"
"But sir..." I shrunk back in my chair and glowered at him.
I heard a snigger behind me, and clearly so did Mr Wright, who twisted his head to face Logan behind me.
"Is this funny to you, new boy? How about you join Hanna in after-school detention.
Logan seemed unfazed by the idea, expressionless. Mr Wright continued his teachings.
"So, who can tell me the year the Vietnam war started? Anyone?"
While Mr Wright lectured everyone about useless dates to do with the Vietnam war, Luke whispered next to me, "there's something about that kid, I could have sworn I saw him growling this morning. And, I swear he was pretending to have claws, you know with his fingers all curled like..." he demonstrated with his own hands. "Kinda like you do sometimes when you're angry!" He laughed.
I thought about it for a moment. After all, it did make sense.
Was it him? Could he be the one I saw this morning?
