Chapter Twenty-Nine: Bullcrap
{Ashley}
When walls crash down around us, it's not something we expect. It kind of sneaks up on us. Something wonderful could've been happening and the next second, snap, everything crumbles.
That's what happened to me.
One second I was being enveloped in Ashton's warm arms and the next she was there, tearing us apart. I don't understand how it happened because, honestly, I was wrapped up in my own little bubble.
"Ashton!" It wasn't a high-pitched squeal like I would've liked. No, she had a voice like an angel and a face to match. Ashton jerked away from my touch with a stunned look. His green eyes never left the red haired beauty strolling towards us, and with each step she took closer the farther away he got from me. A sharp pang of hurt shot through me. Who was she?
"Laurie?" He whispered her name, a slight catch in his voice at the end. I stood to the side, just an observer now. How was I supposed to take this? The two were completely oblivious to my existence now, my boyfriend caught up in the red head.
Laurie's arms snaked around his neck, pulling him into a hug. My heart twisted as Ashton wrapped his arms tightly around her slim waist.
"I can't believe you're here," he breathed, his face buried in her hair the way he did to me. I bit my lip, forcing back the jealousy I felt. As his fingers tangled in her hair I let out a soft cough, trying to ignore the ache I was feeling in my heart. I had a bad feeling about her. Ashton jumped away from the girl the second I made a noise, turning to me with a guilty wince. "Ashy, I can--"
"It's alright, Ashton," I smiled brightly, biting back my jealous words and turning towards the redhead. "He's the worst at introductions."
Her tinkling laughter met my ears and I couldn't help the feeling of hate filling me. Why was she so perfect?
"You're so right," she replied with a grin. Her eyes were a dark green, the same color as Harry's. "I'm Laurie. Ash and I--"
"Were friends," he cut her off with a nervous laugh. I glared at him, knowing she was going to say something else.
"Ashton, it's rude to interrupt," I informed him, shutting him up with a look before turning back to Laurie. "You were saying?"
"Oh, well, um, we used to date," she said, looking between us in confusion. I felt another stab of pain, but tried to ignore it. "What was your name?"
"Ashley," I mumbled, failing at hiding my pain. I turned to Ashton before speaking again. "I'll see you back at the hotel."
"Ashley, c'mon," Ashton reached for my arm, the guilty look showing deeply in his eyes. "We were going to get some ice cream. Mikey's not expecting us for another half hour."
"I know," I replied, staring at the ground. I couldn't look in his eyes. "I'm just...I don't feel well anymore. I'll see you later."
"Ashy," hurt seeped into his voice as I tried to pull away. I could feel his eyes on me, burning a hole into the top of my head. I shook my head softly, blinking back tears. His voice was soft when he spoke again. "I'll walk you back then."
"No, it's fine," I muttered, brushing away the tears with shaky fingers. "Stay and catch up. I'm just really tired. I think I'll go to bed early tonight."
"Ash--"
"It was nice to meet you, Laurie," I smiled weakly at the confused redhead next to us. She smiled back and waved as I stumbled away. I only managed to walk ten steps before I felt arms wrap around my waist.
"Ashley Mae Clifford," his voice was husky, his embrace warm. I loved the feel of his arms around me and instantly leaned into his heavenly warmth. "Would you please tell me what's wrong?"
I scoffed at his words, pulling out of the warm cocoon and walking back towards the hotel. I could see the tall building from where I was. It wouldn't take me long to get back and then I could hide in my bed and eat ice cream all night.
"Aw c'mon, babe!" Ashton called from behind me, jogging to catch up to me. I continued to walk, ignoring him the best I could considering. I kept my eyes on The Grand Hotel, my steps brisk and my breaths quick. "Ashley, she's just a friend!"
"Bull crap," I mumbled under my breath, reaching the double French doors of the hotel. I stepped inside and stomped to the elevator, Ashton following silently. I suppose he finally caught onto the fact that I was severely upset.
The elevator ride was silent, neither of us speaking. I was breaking apart inside, replaying the entire scene over and over. The way his face lit up when he first saw her, the way her held her, the way his fingers tangled in her hair. I couldn't get the images out of my head. I was over-thinking, but I couldn't stop.
Did he still care about her?
