I walk outside to look for Mal. Wherever Mal is, Ben's close behind. I spot her and the others walking to class. I join them and Evie wraps her arm around my shoulders, "Nice dress."
I smile, "Thanks. How are you, Mal? You seem...distracted." She turns and plasters on a smile, "Oh, y'know. Reporters just seem to be everywhere I turn." I sigh, "I know what you mean. I'm still not used to it like Ben is." We pass a bunch of girls who only seem focused on Jay. He smiles flirtatiously back. "Why are you torturing them? Just pick one to take to Cotillion," Carlos tells him. "I'm going solo. That way, I can dance with all of them," Jay explains proudly. I mouth to Evie, "See?" She sighs and pulls me in closer. Carlos suddenly becomes serious, "Jay...if you did ask someone to Cotillion...what's the best way to go?"
Jay sighs and puts his hand of Carlos's shoulder, "Listen. All you gotta do..." Carlos looks at him expectantly, "...is look like me." I can't help but chuckle as Carlos sarcastically laughs. Jane shows up and says, "Mal," snapping her out of her misery. Carlos looks momentarily startled, "Hey Jane." She smiles, "Hi."
"I was wondering...if...uh..if you liked...the carrot cake last night?"
"I had the pumpkin pie," she shrugs.
He looks so lost, "Uh..." Jay saves him, steering him to the courtyard, "Smooth. Hey, Brielle. You wanna go to the Enchanted Lake before fencing practice?" All the cheerleaders watch fencing practice. "I wish I could," I cringe. "But I'm working on a project with Ryan Fitzherbert. I have to get it done soon. Maybe next time." I spin around when I hear Ben, "I gotta ask Ben a question. See you later!"

Jay watches Brielle wait patiently for her turn to talk to Ben. She wouldn't go to the Enchanted Lake with him because she was hanging out with another boy? He felt something he never felt before. Jealousy?

I wait for Jane to show Ben the rough draft of the stained glass window for Mal. I thrust three samples of green in Ben's face, "Which green should we use?" He discards the light green and medium green and holds up the darkest shade, "This one." I nod, "Great." I take the samples, "See you later."
I sit on my bed, flipping through my photo album. Ryan and I worked for three hours and I am so exhausted. Someone softly knocks on my door, "It's open." Evie pokes her head in, "Is Allison here?" I shake my head, "Good. I was just looking for you." I put my album down and stand up, "Evie, what's wrong?" She takes a deep, shaky breath.
"Mal's gone. She went back to the Isle."

We knock on Ben's office door. Evie opens it a little, "Ben. It's me and Brie. We need to talk." He stands up, "Sure. Come in." We walk in and I look down at my heels before hesitantly looking at Ben, "Mal's gone back to the Isle." He blinks slowly and she hands him the note Mal left. He takes it and just opens it when I say softly, "Ben." I place his ring in his hand- the ring he gave Mal. He quickly reads the note and shakes his head, "This is my fault. This is my fault. I blew it. She'd been under so much pressure lately, and instead of being understanding, I just went all Beast on her!" He slams his hands on his desk and then straighten up again, "I have to go there and apologize. I have to go there and... and beg her to come back."
Evie shakes her head, "Ben, you'll never find her." He stammers helplessly and looks out the window. "You need to know the Isle and how it works and... you have to take me with you." He looks relieved, "Yes! Are you sure?" Evie smiles sadly, "Yeah. She's my best friend."
I speak up, "I'm going with you." She nods, "And we'll bring the boys too, because there's safety in numbers, and none of us is too popular over there right now." He nods, "Thank you." She turns to face him, "But let's get two things straight. You have to promise me that I won't get stuck there again." I felt so bad for Evie. She really didn't want to go back to the Isle. I put a hand on her shoulder, "We promise."
"And there's no way you're going looking like that. Neither of you."
