I sighed as I took notes in my notebook. Unfortunately, today we actually had to get to work. I listened closely to my science teacher, Mrs. McCall. Today we were on Unit 1, learning about living things and the ecosystem. I looked over at Taj who was struggling to keep his eyes opened and I giggled quietly to myself. I also looked over at Thomas who was looking at Taj and also giggling quietly to myself. I nudged his leg with my knee and he immediately shot up as if he wasn't falling asleep and starting writing again.

"In an ecosystem, there are three main rolls. You have the decomposers, the consumers, and the producers." Mrs. McCall went on. For the the duration of class, she went on to explain the roles in more detail. I stopped writing after about 45 minutes because now she was just starting to repeat herself and my notebook doesn't have time for that.

"I'm hungryyyyy." Taj whispered to me.

"Yeah me too." I whispered back. "15 more minutes. You can power through it." He sighed, sitting back in his chair, arms crossed, continuing to listen to the lesson. After listening to her repeat herself for what seemed longer than 15 minutes, the bell rang.

"Praise him." Taj said.

"You're a clown." I say back, laughing.

"Before you leave." she began. "I'm coming around with your homework assignment for tonight, it's one page, no back." As soon as Taj, Thomas, and I got our paper, we were out of there.

"So how much homework do we have so far?" Thomas asked as we walked downstairs to the cafeteria.

"Right now, just math and science." I answer.

"Science, no problem." Taj said. "But math is where I draw the line."

"Math class wasn't that bad." I said. "You'd know that if you had your eyes open."

"I can listen with my ears." he responded.

"Yeah, but where are your notes?" I ask.

"Don't worry about that." he said. "That's why I have a sister."

We joined everyone at the table, just like we did yesterday.

"What's up y'all?" Taj asked as we sat down.

"I'm hungry." was the first thing that came out of China and Lauryn's mouth.

"I don't see how." I said. "You all get that huge breakfast everyday for the rest of the school year from Mr. Fairbanks."

"Okay and." China said, staring at me. "It was good and now I'm hungry again."

"It's okay to be hungry, China." Thomas said. "I'm hungry all the time too. 5 minutes after lunch is over, I'm gonna be hungry again."

"See, at least someone gets it." China says.

"I get it." Booboo joined in. "Except not really." He laughed.

"You'll understand one day." she replied, running her hand through his super long hair.

"Ugh." Lauryn said. "Your hair is so beautiful Booboo. Teach me."
