"mom, "
"yes darling," her mom answered brushing out the tangled hair, "oh Dawn, you still haven't learnt to brush your own hair. When I was your age, I knew how to do a lot of things and you... you're just amazing."
"well don't blame me. I'm not like every normal teenager. I don't go to school, I'm home-schooled. I don't have friends, my only friends are the birds that chirps on the trees outside my room, my phone and the television. Oh and don't forget the boring teachers you set me up with everyday. And I am a hundred percent sure my life will never be like every teenage girl. Mom, my sixteenth birthday is next week, and guess how I'm going to spend it, with a cake, knife, an absent dad and absent-present mom. Nice!" she said like she had been holding it for long. She turns around to face her mom now, cupping her chin, "mom, whatever it is you and dad couldn't tell me, you can tell me now, I promise to understand. Tell me why I'm locked in here, for over thirteen years now,"
"Dawn, some things cannot be said just like that. When the time is right, I'll tell you, but for now, just be a good girl to mommy and daddy. We love you betee, but please try not to question the decisions made in this house."
"does it have anything to do with uncle Poorab?" the question came like a blow to her mother who just sat and stared at her maturing daughter, "is that why Dave isn't allowed here anymore?"
"Dawn..." their discussion was interrupted by a loud crash on the floor. Rushing out to see from the rails of the first floor down to the ground floor, an angry dad/husband fumes in.
"can't you watch where you're going!" he screamed at the poor servant. Once he's in a state like this, only Dawn's mother has the keys to unlocking a calm him and no one, not even Dawn has an idea how she does it.
"what's wrong with father?"
"I'll find out. Go to your room." she instructed before heading for the stairs.
'"go!" she instructed the servant who bowed his head with already teary eyes and ran off. She sat beside her husband, now caressing his back,
"Sam?" she called out softly.
"he's back Sneha. He's back." he sad with muffled tears, his hands clenched under his chin supported by his knee.
"it can't be. I always felt weird and I knew he'd come back but not so soon."
"he warned me , he threatened m," he was now walking up and down his wife's eyes fixed on him, before he sat back on the chair and held her hands. "baby, I will give him everything , all the property, right now, I'm no match t him, he's not my brother, he's a villain, he can go to any length now, if he could kill his wife, the only woman who supported him when he was wrong, then he can do anything, and Dawn, she can't be involved in this mess."
"look at me Samarth, I don't have a problem with your decision, but think of the last time you tried giving him the property papers, do you remember what he did?" she asked and he removed his hand from hers.
"he killed father."
"exactly. Poorab is no longer after property papers, his mind has been clouded with wicked revenge that nothing can stop him."
"so what am I supposed to do now baby? I can't fold my hands and watch him ruin our lives,"
"right now, in this heated moment, ideas won't come to mind. Get in touch with the government to give you license to more armed bodyguards, Dawn's sixteenth birthday is next week, we have no other option but to cancel her birthday, "
"it will kill her,"
"emotionally and not physically." she replied. He saw her point. "now, forget this subject for the mean time, I'll serve you dinner in the room, go freshen up, relax your mind baby. Please or else your blood pressure will rise again.""thanks love." h pecked her as he picked his suit and briefcase and went up to his room.
NEXT DAY
During breakfast they all ate in silence until Dawn broke it.
"So, I decided to apply to some colleges," her mother dropped her fork on her plate and stared at her daughter in disbelief.
"you did what?!" her husband held her hand to calm her,
"yes mom. Since no one wants to, I decided to do it myself."
"you don't know anyone outside this house not even school," her father said.
"Dave. I talk to him even though you're not relating well with uncle Poorab, that's Dave's school so he helped me and I got the admission," she said.
"Dawn, you've been talking Dave behind our backs, and you have the nerves to sit here and tell us you're going to his school, against our wishes!" her mother screamed at her.
"calm down Sneha,"
"Don't tell me to calm down Samarth, does she know what she's doing? He could be setting a trap for her and she's being ultimately stubborn. We've been over this issue already!"
"well maybe I wouldn't be so stubborn if you tell me what's going on!" she screamed back at her mom, the two standing facing each other with deadly glares. Her mom reached for her phone and smashed it on the floor,
"no more nonsense about Dave. This will be the last time you'll speak to him, and your home-schooling continues. And! There will not be a birthday celebration next week, not even a cake or knife!" with that her mom stormed out of the dining hall. Hot tears streamed down her face, her father approached her but before he could place a hand on his daughter and comfort her, she ran off to her room banging the door shut.
