Okay, sorry for the super long hiatus, but this has been bothering me for a while now and I see it way too often on this site, so I figured it's time to address it.
Straight ships with canonically gay characters/people.
I've seen so many people do these and even more people get upset about it and I don't think there's any reason to be upset about them. Trust me, I'm guilty of it myself, but I've been thinking a lot about it lately.
Remus and Sirius from Harry Potter
Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf
Sherlock and Watson from Sherlock
Kara and Lena from Supergirl
Harry and Draco from Harry Potter
Steve and Bucky from Captain America
Finn and Poe from Star Wars
Liam and Theo from Teen WolfWhat do all these pairs have in common? They are very popular same-sex ships in which one or both are confirmed to be straight or meant to be presumed as such. Whether they actually are or not is unimportant. (I will forever hate the Teen Wolf writers for teasing Sterek for so long. Stiles is bisexual, it was practically confirmed many many times. Derek is just a brooding man-child who needs to sort out his emotions. That is a rant for another day. Moving on.)
But almost no one ever has a problem with these ships. Even though many are married with children, it's commonly accepted and often one of the most popular fanfiction premises for their respective series.
So why do people make such a big deal about straight ships in which one or both characters are confirmed to be 100% not attracted to the opposite gender? We're all guilty of it. I immediately stop reading a Glee fanfiction if there's even mention of a Sebastian X Santana storyline. Why?
Why do I stop reading for that but not when Rachel and Quinn are going at it in the girl's bathroom?
If it's acceptable for writers to change canon to make Newt and Minho fall in love, why not have an epic romance between Kurt and Mercedes?
Fanfiction is all about changing the story the author told and making it your own. It's nice to stay true to the stories we love so much, but we can't view it as acceptable to ship two straight girls together, but not to ship a lesbian and a gay guy. It just doesn't make any sense.
For those who say it's because the LGBTQ+ community needs more representation in pop culture and on the internet, it's a common phrase for the community to say, "Love is love." If an author decides two characters have enough chemistry for a love story, they should write that love story.
This is sort of similar to that argument that a woman hitting a man is considered to be strong, but a man hitting a woman is considered a monster. Never mind the reason, a man is never allowed to his a woman, even if she's the one assaulting him. So many men have taken sexual harassment from women, too afraid to physically push them away or do anything, from fear of being arrested for sexual harassment. But a woman is entirely allowed to slap a man in the face if he brushes her accidentally. In fact, she is viewed as a hero. A strong, independent woman who can stand up for herself.
I'm getting off-topic, but I just want everyone to know that it's completely okay for a person to ship two characters who wouldn't actually be attracted to each other.
I mean, look at this! How can you not at least think about shipping these two?
Anyways, that's my little rant for the night. Sorry again about the long wait.
Until next time, stay weird, stay wonderful, and stay you!
