Chapter 4: An explanation

Goggles woke up the next day. He sat up slowly then leaned forward into his plush "I had another weird dream....." he said before glancing over at his shelf. "Good morning Goggles. Kyubey said as he leaned to the side a bit. The blue squid looked surprised but the sighed from relief 'it wasn't a dream.' He thought then smiled.

Soon Goggles got dressed and was in the bathroom with his mom brushing his teeth. "Goggles, you got home pretty late last night didn't ya?" "I got invited over to a friend's house." That's when his mom spit some water out of her mouth. "I don't want to start cracking down on you with curfews and stuff. Next time let us know where you are before dinner." "I'm sorry," Goggles said quietly before looking over at Kyubey who was in the bathroom with them. 'People really can't see him.'

Goggles started to remember the conversation him and Bobble had with Specs last night. The three of them walked into his apartment with Goggles and Bobble still being surprised at the size of it even after the number of times they have been there already. Specs went to the kitchen to get some refreshments while the two other blue squids sat down. He soon came back out with cake and tea for the three of them. "Wow Specs, this is delicious!" Goggles exclaimed before taking another bite of the cake. "Yeah, super delicious!" Bobble agreed. "Thank you." Specs replied before taking a breath. "Since Kyubey chose the two of you that means you're both involved in this, like it or not. I thought it would be good if we had a talk." "Go ahead, ask us anything you want." "Bobble, you got it wrong."

Specs laughed a bit at the other two squids before showing them his soul gem. "Woah, that's pretty." Goggles said when he saw it. "It's called a soul gem. When Kyubey chooses someone it's created when they make a contact with him. It's the source of our magic. It also proves that we're magical squids." Specs explained. "What's this contract?" "I will grant each of you one wish. Any wish you desire." Kyubey told them. "Huh, for reals?" "Anything at all?" Bobble and Goggles both asked. "Anything at all! I can grant the most impossible of miracles." "Woah. We could wish for treasure, or eternal youth, or a 108-course banquet." Bobble said before Goggles laughed nervously and said "Maybe the last one is a bit much." "In exchange for that wish your soul gem is created. But if you have a soul gem it will be your duty to fight witches" "Witches?"

Goggles then stopped staring into space and decided to ask his mom something. "Hey, mom?" "Hm?" "This might sound silly but if someone could grant any wish you wanted using magic, what would you wish for?" "I would wish for those two trustees to get kicked right from the company." His mom said quickly. The boy then laughed nervously having a feeling that he got his mom on a rant. "Come to think of it, there's the CEO. He's too old to keep up the pace like he used to, so maybe I would wish for him to retire. Thing is he hasn't named a successor yet." "What would you do if you became the new CEO?" "How would I go about it? If I could get enough support from the sales department, the planning committee, and general affairs that leaves old baldi in accounting. Interesting...." His mom mumbled to herself. "Mom, your eyes are scary," Goggles said as he once again began to remember last night.

"What is a witch anyway? Are they different from magical squids?" Bobble asked. "If magical squids are said to be born from wishes then witches are creatures born from curses. Magical squids bring hope to the world. Witches bring dispair. And since they're invisible to humans they're that much more insidious. Anxiety and mistrust. Rage and hatred. They sew the seeds of disaster all over the world." Kyubey explained. "Suicides that can't be explained and murders without motive. A witches curse is most likely the cause of such things. It fosters within a person and grows and grows until it consumes them." Specs said with a serious tone of voice.

"If there's things like that out there how come people don't know about them?" "A witch is careful about not letting people see them. They hide deep within the labyrinths they create. That maze-like place you were in today, that was a labyrinth." "Actually, you were both in a lot of danger. If someone ever wanders into one, they rarely make it out alive." "Is that what you do? You fight these horrible creatures Specs?" Goggles asked worried. "Yes, I risk my life. That's why I want you two to think carefully before you decide. Kyubey chose you and offered a rare chance. It's true that he'll grant whatever wish you can think of but remember, death is part of that deal." "Ugh, now I'm stressed." "I know it's a tough decision but maybe if you went on a few witch hunts with me it will help you decide." "Huh?" Bobble and Goggles said surprised. "See for yourself what it's like to fight a witch. Think about the offer for a little longer."

Goggles kept looking in the mirror but still remembered what Specs told them. "Think long and hard. Ask yourselves, is there something you want so badly that it's worth putting your life in danger for?"

Goggles ran down the walkway towards Bobble and Prince. "Good morning!" He called. "Oh, good morning," Prince replied turning around. "Hey," Bobble said before stopping in her tracks. "Good morning Bobble," Kyubey said while on Goggles' shoulder. Bobble made kept making weird noises when Prince asked "You look ill, is something the matter?" "Looks like we're the only ones who can see him huh?" Bobble whispered to the other blue squid. "Guess so." He replied. "What are you-?" The yellow squid started but was interrupted. "Nah, it's nothing. Well, let's go."

That's when Goggles decided to communicate to Bobble through thought. 'We can communicate like this. Just by thinking to each other.' 'You mean we already have magical powers! For real?!' 'No, not yet. I'm letting you communicate your thoughts through me. It's kind of a handy trick, don't you think?' Kyubey explained. 'It feels sorta weird.' Bobble replied.

"Excuse me, what's going on between you? Why do you keep staring at each other? " Prince asked. "Huh, uh..." Goggles started as he began to stumble over his words. The yellow squid then dropped his bag out of surprise "I can't believe it! Just by looking at eachother you know what the other is thinking!" Prince then gasped "how can two people become that intimate after one night? What did you do after I left yesterday?" He asked the two blue squids. "I can't believe he's going there..." Bobble muttered under her breath. "Well actually, what happened was-" Goggles started but was cut off by Prince. "That's enough, you can't be serious! You're both girls!" Goggles then got a confused look on his face as soon as Prince said that. "Girls can't love girls! GIRLS CAN'T LOVE GIRLS!" Prince kept exclaiming as he ran off. "I'm a guy...." Goggles said as Prince ran away. "Hey wait, you forgot your bag!" Bobble called after him. "What's wrong with him? Prince is acting just like you today." Goggles said. "What the heck is that supposed to mean?" Bobble asked but it went unanswered as the two continued to school.
