**this chapter talks about drug abuse. Please read with caution. I'm not trying to offend or trigger anybody emotionally. I deeply apologize in advance for anyone who will be upset about his. There will be three Astrics before and after the talk of drugs if you want to skip over that part**
"What? Jay's not your dad?" Emma asked. "I'm confused."
"No. He's my dad. He's just not the guy who provided the sperm."
"Still not following, but that's not the point?" Emma said, shaking her head. "What did dumbass know about your dad, like sperm dad, that you could only talk to him about?"
I took a deep breath and sighed.
"My dad, sperm dad, left my mom as soon as he found out she was pregnant. He didn't want anything to do with her or me. But what 17 year old boy would? Anyway, he turned 18 before I was born so my mom started to make him pay child support for me and he did for a while." I paused, catching my breath.
"Okay. Then what happened?"
***
"He started trading his child support money in for drugs and alcohol. So he eventually was supposed to come to court for backed child support."
"He didn't show?" Emma asked, her tone of voice changing.
"No. And this was about the time I started kindergarten so Miles and Melody were already born, Jay was already married to my mom. I had spent the past three or four years with him as the only male figure in my life."
"So what happens when you dad didn't show to court?"
"They found him passed out on a bench from an opioid overdose. Once they revived him and brought him to the hospital, they sent him to a detox center and then straight to jail with I think a $1000 bail. No one cared enough to bail him out so he was forced to sever his sentence."
***
"How long was he in jail?"
"He got out a couple of weeks before my 14th birthday." I said, wiping my face with my shirt.
"And did he get in contact with you?"
"He wrote me letters once a month until about my 12th birthday and then he just stopped. And then when he got out, he showed up at one of my soccer games unannounced and tried to apologize. Jay took him out to the parking lot and I didn't hear much from him after that except for supervised visitations."
"What happened with the child support situation?"
"Jay legally adopted me in 2009 so my mom said that he didn't need to worry about the child support anymore, not that he was paying it to begin with."
"Makes sense. But how does this all lead back to you in douchbags bed at Christmas?"
***
"Right. That." I said raising my eyebrows for emphasis.
"Yeah that. The whole reason for this conversation."
"Umm so apparently I'm his emergency contact. I don't know how that happened, but I am." I said shaking my head.
"What does that have to do with anything."
"So a few days after I got back home, I got a call from the regional hospital telling me that he was in there and he was in bad shape. They said that I needed to come down there and sign his papers to release him to a rehab facility."
