Skylar
I fell asleep.
That is the one thing I am aware of.
The moment I reached my classroom and sat on my seat was the moment I realized that the adrenaline I had had started to wane.
I am also aware that I just probably dashed off to the classroom, leaving my bestfriend, Ella, behind. One minute I was entering the class, the next minute, I heard the door being locked.
Ugh! Locking the doors in classrooms should be prohibited. Like, seriously?
Anyway, knowing that Ella would not be with me to sit through this boring class, I began to snooze, my eyes feel heavy and the sleepless night before finally caught up on me.
I found myself alone in the darkness. I blinked, trying to force my eyes to adjust in the dark. And then, out of the blue, a light made its way to my place which made me see where I am.
Not noticing the color of the light, I assessed my location. Chairs, desks, blackboards... I'm in our classroom?
What the?
Finally, I saw it. The color of the light that flooded the room was red.
Blood. Red.
I followed the source of the light through the windows but immediately halted as a shriek, a gasp or something in between came out of my lips as I saw the vision that greeted my eyes.
Above, hanging in the night sky is the moon. But instead of its natural white light, it was the color of blood.
Frozen in place, I just stood there staring up at the moon until a piercing scream tore through my ears.
The scream is deafening and one can say that whoever is screaming is experiencing an extreme pain. Part of me wants to just stay in the classroom but a larger part told me to follow the scream. Maybe because that person is in serious trouble and might need help or maybe the scream is somehow familiar, like I know who it is. I know that voice. And whoever that is, needs me.
I rushed to the door and yanked it open. However, upon walking through, I saw that the hallway that I should be seeing and should be walking on to was not there. Instead, I found myself in another room, surrounded by brick walls. Since when did we have brick walls in our school? I thought for a second. Looming a few feet opposite to where I am standing is another door.
Fear started to creep through my system as I stared at the door. I tried to turn, tried to go back to where I came from, only to find that the door I used to get here, that was supposed to be just right there is gone. There is nothing but brick walls, as if my fate is sealed.
I guess I have no choice then.
The warning bells inside my head seemed to signal me to be careful which is odd because they should scream at me to not enter the door ahead, not knowing what lies ahead.
My mind wants to see what's behind the door, screaming at me to just walk the few feet away and push the door open.
Taking a deep breath, I braved the door and slowly, slowly, pushed it open.
I was hesitant and apprehensive to enter because there is nothing but darkness beyond the door that I opened. I took a step back when a strong sensation from inside the door pulled me in. Before I knew it, I was locked in the endless darkness. I backed up against the cool surface behind me and tried to feel the knob of the door with my hands, surprised to feel nothing but the cool cement. Somehow, the door vanished and in its place is just another wall of bricks, again.
Seriously?
A chill went through my spine as the sound of dangling chains reached my ear.
Suddenly, it was no longer dark. The room came to life as torchlights suddenly lit the place I was in, which looked like a hall than a room. I blinked and realized that it was not simple a hall. The metal bars that lined the sides of the hallway, making it look more like prison cells.
The sound of the dangling chains continued to echo throughout the hall. The smell of what seemed to be rotten flesh hit my nose, almost suffocating me.
I know for a fact that this is all just a dream, but damn it! This is the worst dream. Everything looks so real, feels so real. This explains why I was rooted to my spot, unable to move or even try to force myself to wake.
I was still frozen in the spot when suddenly a huge wolf appeared from ten feet in front of me, snarling and looking at me like I am its last meal. When it pounced on me, I thanked everything that is holy for giving me the strength and quickness from being eaten alive.
Releasing my breath, I realized that the rotten stench from earlier have become stronger from where I had jumped. And it's coming from something right in front of me. I must have jumped towards one of the cells because I can feel my hands gripping the metal bars tightly. And then, a scream tore through my throat as I looked in horror on what's lying in the other side of the cell.
Another wolf.
But this one's already dead. The foul stench of rotten flesh is coming from it. Although it was dark, the torchlights in the hallway are enough to let me see its grotesque state.
I slowly backed away from the cell only to stop when my back hit something.
Oh no.
How stupid.
I forgot about the wolf that was about to eat me.
Too afraid to look up, I accepted my fate. I held my breath and closed my eyes.
Accepting my fate in this nightmare, I braced myself, ready to feel its teeth on me or even swallow me whole.
Instead of the two fate I accepted, I heard it or rather him utter a familiar name.
A gasp escaped my lips at the familiar voice. I felt him knelt behind me. His breath fanning my nape and ear as he placed his head on my shoulder, trying to catch his breath.
I was unable to move from my spot again, that is, until his body gave out. With the shock and fear of everything in this dream, I was unable to support both our weight when he collapsed.
Bracing myself for the hard impact of my head towards the ground, I was prepared to feel the pain on my forehead; on a split second, wishing I will finally get out of this hellish nightmare.
Whack!
I bolted upright at the sound of a wood hitting wood. With my heart still beating wildly, either from the intense dream or from being woken up so suddenly, I barely heard the word "detention" from Mrs. Salazar.
Breathing hard, I watched her walk back to the front.
I tried to steady my breaths by slowly breathing to my nose when the school bell went off, almost giving a heart attack.
While everyone was either preparing to go to the next class or either already out the door, I stayed in my seat for a few more minutes, trying again to even out my breaths. I closed my eyes as I ran my hands through my hair.
What the heck just happened?
Somehow, trying to recall my dream now seemed impossible. I know it's terrifying but now that I am trying to remember it, the images in my head started to become blurry and impossible make out except for one thing.
The name that thing said that I would recognize anywhere.
"Witchita."
