It was finally lunch and everybody scattered out. Ramiro walked out of class and put his books in his locker grabbed out a protein bar and a Monster Zero from his backpack and headed toward the cafeteria. He wasn't sure if he was going to stop first or meet with Mia at the tables. He figured he would play it out as it comes. He was getting closer to the cafeteria he could hear the loud voices and the smell of hot lunch. He really wasn't sure what he was feeling. But one thing he did know what that his hands became sweaty and he had a lump in his throat. His heart was racing, pounding so hard it was going to burst out his chest. He turned the corner and there they were two guys that stood six one dressed in their uniforms at the table. There were only three people standing over there. Ramiro took a deep breath and proceeded to walk over. The men greeted him. They started talking, Ramiro began to tell them about himself and what some of his future goals were. And then he began to ask questions about What Marine Basic Training Is like? And where he would have to go for training. If it would be Parris Island or San Diego? And what happens after marine boot camp? And what kind of jobs do they think would be best for him in the Marines? Isaiah one of the Marine recruiters stated that because he was only seventeen he would have to speak with his parents. Ramiro gave him his address and phone number. Isaiah said that they would be in touch as he handed him some pamphlets. Ramiro grabbed them. Isaiah said they had more in depth information on joining the Marines And what they have to offer. He walked back to his locker and stuffed them into his backpack. And headed out to meet up with Mia before lunch was over.

He made it by Mia for the last ten minutes of lunch. For the rest of the afternoon all he could think about was the Marines. It was definitely a lot to think about. He was trying to come up with ways to explain to his parents that this is what he wants to do. He didn't think about how it was going to affect Mia. For awhile he thought he was being selfish, and incinerate because he wasn't thinking about her.

The bell rang it was three o'clock. He texted Mia to ask if she wanted a ride home. She texted back saying she would meet him out in the parking lot. He waited, and waited until finally she comes out twenty minutes later. He was pissed. And started yelling at her.

"Damn Mia what the fuck took you so long shit i dont know if you didnt get the memo but there are other people in the world besides you. Like me and my family. I'm getting so tired of you acting like a stuck up spoiled little bitch."

"Ugh what did you just say to me! You can't talk to me like that. I'm your girlfriend not one of your nasty dirty smelly homeboys! You don't think that im getting tired of you too. Nobody would even know you if it wasn't for me."

" fuck you Mia your bitch ass can walk home sorry I ruined your life. Oh, by the way, I'm joining the Marines so I wont be here this summer! I guess it should be easy for you to get in someone else's pants! Later"

He sped off.

That was definitely not the way he planned on telling her. But it was done and he felt relieved that part was over. Less knots in his stomach. He had the music so loud he didn't hear his phone going off. He pulled into the driveway his dad was outside cutting grass. He grabbed his bag and phone and ran up the steps. Hung his keys on the hook and dropped his backpack on the floor and walked toward the kitchen where he smelled mole cooking. His mom was sitting at the island.

" hey Ramiro Mia called she said for you to call her she's called three times already must be important."

" yeah later um mom I need to talk to you in dad about something"

" about what?"

You should sit down I'll get dad.

She sat down. He walked outside and flagged for his dad to come in.

He grabbed the pamphlets out of his bag. His dad came in and washed his hands. He took a seat next to his wife. He scratched his head confused.

What's going on? He asked

" I don't know Ramiro needed to talk to us about something." She answered

He walked back to the kitchen.

"Ramiro what's going on whats this about?"

He took a deep breath and before he had time to think his mouth was already moving

"Marines"

"Marines! What No" she cried out

"Marines? Son this isn't something to be joking about. The Marines this is serious. Is it that you just don't want to go to college? Listen you still have a year left you have plenty of time to think this over."

" dad to be honest this is what I want l've been thinking about this a lot. There was a recruiter at school today I met with them at lunch. They gave me these. He showed them the pamphlets.

" I'm not doing this to hurt you both but I want to serve my country."

His dad never felt more proud of his son in that moment.  He felt like he grew ten feet taller. He looked over at Marianna

" mami he is almost eighteen this is ultimately his decision we as parents need to respect and support him." Said Enrique
