5:43am
The cold winter air bit my nose and cheeks as i stirred from my sleep. I shifted a little and felt the heat of another body lying next to me. My eyelids opened slowly, as Cam's arm draped around my shoulder pulling me closer, his skin burning against mine and warming me up, his soft hair tickling my forehead as he kissed my cheek turning me to face him and hugging me tighter. So this is what it felt like to wake up next to someone who loves you. But i didn't understand myself, as i gazed at him i couldn't help but feel that this is all a dream, or I'm in some sort of limbo between artificial life and reality. I hated how doubtful i could be about one of the good thing that i have in this disastrous time of need. My thoughts shifted to my family, for some reason i didn't believe Cam's promise to take care of my family and to be honest i didn't feel comfortable with Cam and Luca knowing so much about my personal life and having this hold over me.
I got out of bed quietly so not to wake Cam and went to the bathroom, on the way grabbing a thermal top and my pj bottoms. After brushing my teeth and washing my face i wondered how i should proceed in life, I needed to find out more about what happened to my brother. I can't believe i just let him off the hook like that, being so selfish and wrapped up in my own 'problems' i failed to see that my brother was really hurting inside. I studied anthropology and how to read faces in my spare time, a little guilty pleasure of mine, i knew he was lying, but my anger ate me up and blurred my ability to see him as he was. Something happened to my brother that year he was missing, it's almost impossible for something not to have happened. I got out of the bathroom and reached for my phone dialing my brothers number.
"Hello" answered a sleepy Leo
"Oh good, you're awake"
"Yeah, just finished herding my elephants" he paused to laugh at his own comical geniusness "What's up?"
"I want to know what really happened to you when you went missing" i heard him catch his breath, and breath out slowly
"Sis, i know you were worried-"
"Damn right i was worried" i hushed my voice "I thought you were dead. And now some crazy daemon things are after our family and there are fricking rumors in the underworld that we killed Satan...wow that sounds crazy even out loud"
"Look, you are the only person i can truly trust, not just because you're my sister but because those rumors are true." he paused, i let out a breath i didn't know i was holding "it's just us. those two friends of yours? We can't trust them either okay? We trust no one. And as for my going AWOL i want you to know that i was fine"
"Leo..."
"it's nearly 6am let's go get some coffee"
"Okay" i whispered
"i'll meet you outside by your block.."
"Okay. Bye" i felt like an idiot. He was lying to me, talk about trusting no one, my own brother doesn't give me any reason to trust him. i threw on a pair of jeans, got my bag and jacket and left the room
The weather was horrid, frost and mist everywhere, but it makes this place even more beautiful. i closed my eyes and breathed deeply. I felt a hand on my shoulder, my eyes sprung open and my fist collided with his ribs.
"Arghhh...Jesus" Leo groaned
"Sorry not sorry" i said
"Oh we playing that game again?" he coughed
"Well, you didn't seem sorry when you lied to me on the phone" i kept a stern face, his eyes widened a little in fear,
"I didn't -"
"Cut the shit Leo." i watched his face, he was looking to the ground... "Shame...you're feeling shame right now" he looked up at me "and a little bit of guilt. Why is that?" he closed his eyes and turned away "son of a bitch can't even look me in they eye. What did you do Leo?"
"If i told you..." his voice trailed off "you wouldn't look at me the same"
"You're my brother, you'll always look like a douche to me" i folded my hands over my chest to keep me warm
"And you'll always look like a noob" his attempt to amuse me went to waste, and he noticed this as my face gave away the annoyance i was feeling "So...lets go to the coffee shop" we walked across to the on campus cafe, a quaint little place with a plaque next to the door, it was all in Latin so i didn't understand much apart from the word 'and' in a couple of places. the coffee shop was lit up with dim fairy lights and candles and a fireplace so huge it could quite possibly be another room, inside there were quite a few teachers getting lesson plans together and some students reading or on their laptops. For some strange reason, this place felt like home. It sure did look like a huge house, with large archways leading to more tables and chairs all over the place, there was also a large set of stairs which im guessing leads up to more floors of chairs, booths and tables. I went to sit down in a plush booth with red suede seats and fairy lights around them while my brother went to get the coffee. i took a look at the people around me i couldn't quite put my finger on how this place was familiar. Within minuets my brother was sitting opposite me with two cups of coffee, both black with no sugar. Guess it runs in the family.
"Okay, spill. And no bullshitting because i'll know if you are, and believe me i will punch you in the face." i warned. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose
"Okay..."
