Chapter 34. I can't be with you.

Ross's POV:
"What's this about Ross?" Maia asked. "I'm really nervous about the thing I got for McKenna." She gave me a confused look. "I'm going to ask... her to... Marry me." She smiled widely. "That's awesome!! She'll love it. Do you need some practice?" I nodded. "OK, ask me pretending I'm her." I took a deep breath. "I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?"
McKenna's POV:
I was heartbroken. I have no words. "Alright, don't tell anyone until I'm ready." I heard him say. She replied with an OK. I hoped into the bathroom so they didn't see me. I went back to the room. I tried to put on a brave face. "Hey. You OK?" Ross asked. "Just fine." I gritted my teeth. After everyone opened presents I went to the room. I was in no position to face people. I think I may have to breakup with him. I mean, think about. We aren't meant to be. He's cheated on me more than once. He's a pop-star and I'm a regular girl. He needs someone to meet his standards. I obviously don't. I still love him but he deserves better and so do I. He'd probably be better off with Maia. She's waaay prettier than me, and nicer, she doesn't seem like the jealous type either. Unlike me. I had to talk to someone about this, but not from his family. I know who to call.
"Hello? McKenna."

"Hazel, I really need to talk to you." I cried.

"What's wrong? Is everything OK?"

"No. I.. I have to breakup with Ross."

"Why? I thought everything was going well."

"Me too. Until I thought about it. We aren't meant to be. He cheated on me, and tore me apart. We just aren't compatible. I need to start a new life. With your help."

"OK. I'm always here for you. I'm always here in LA for you. All you need to do is call."

"Thanks hazel. Bye!

"Bye."

I hung up the phone and cried. I wish it didn't have to end up this way. I don't think I can take him back after this. I need to get over him. None of this is working out the way I had imagined it. Then Maia walked in. "Hey! Ross wants to... Oh my gosh! Are you OK?" I glared at her. "No." She sat next to me. "Do you want to talk about it?" No chance. "Why don't you go kiss up to my boyfriend. Soon to be ex...." She gasped. "I have no clue what you are- I cut her off. "Save it! You know what? I really don't care what you say. I don't like you. I never have. I think you are a boyfriend stealing jerk." She was speechless. "I never wanted to steal Ross from you. I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not going to get angry with you because I see where you are coming from." I sighed. "Why do you have to do that? Stop being so sweet. It's just another reason Ross is going to leave me for you." I slightly yelled. "I think I should get Ross. You two have to talk I think." She got up and left. Great, now Ross is going to hate me for going off on Maia. I just drove him further away from me. Then Ross came in. "Babe. Are you OK? Maia said you were really upset." Maybe she didn't tell him. I didn't respond. "Are you still jealous of her?" He asked. "I was never jealous of her. I told you I don't like her. I also told her that." I blurted out. "Why? She never hurt you." I crossed my arms. "Maybe but you did." He looked confused. "What are you talking about?" So he wants to play dumb. "You know what I'm talking about Ross." He shook his head. "Are you on your period or something? You keep having all these mood swings." I raised my eyebrows. "NO! HOW DARE YOU?! You and no other male idiot can reference my mood to being on my period. Just get out please. I need some time alone." He sighed. "Fine." He left with that. See what I mean? We aren't compatible. I know what I have to do.

Ross's POV:

Why is she so angry? This morning she was all sweet and kind. I don't know what's gotten into her. Maybe it's Maia being here. I don't know if I should propose to her anymore. Maybe I should wait till she's happy. Maybe I should do it to make her feel better. What if I ask her now and she rejects me? There is also the possibility that she will say yes. I don't know what to do. I went to find Maia. I pulled her into a different room. "Maia, I don't know what to do. She's mad at me but I have no clue why." I cried. "Yeah. She went off on me too. She said I was trying to steal you away. When I told her I wasn't mad because of her jealousy, she screamed at me. She said that me being sweet was another reason for you to leave her." I see what this is about. "She thinks I don't love her. That's why. She thinks I'll leave her for you. She probably thinks I'm going to cheat on her again." Maia gasped. "You cheated on her? Well no wonder she has her doubts. I don't blame her. I'd feel the same way. Talk to her and fix this or you'll lose her." She was probably right.

McKenna's POV:

Ross came in after an hour. This was it. I had to do it. No matter how hard it was, it's for the best. "Can we talk?" He asked. "Yes. I have something to say." I said. "So do I. Um, you can go first." I took a big breath. "OK, so I've been thinking... about us. I think.. it's best if...." I trailed off. "What are you saying babe?" I sighed. "We need to breakup." He gasped. "What?! Why?" He cried. "Ross, this just isn't working out between us. It's not that hard to understand. We fight and get into arguments. We haven't been getting along lately. I just can't do this anymore." I explained. "No! We can make this work. Don't do this please?" I began to cry. "I can't be be with you. You're famous. You have a career. I can't follow you around for the rest of my life. I have to start my own. You'll be fine without me." He cried. "No! I need you. I don't want to be famous if I can't be with you." He sang to me. "You'll be fine Ross. I'll- he cut me off. "No oscar, no grammy, no mansion in Miami. The sun don't shine, the sky ain't blue, if I can't be with you." He sang while crying. "Ross, please don't make this any harder. Don't cry. You'll find a nice, gorgeous girl." Tears fell down my face. "Just remember, I'll always love you Ross."
