She Returns

Ten minutes later, Isabel and I were sitting on the grass with hundreds of other girls that had shown up.

“This isn’t going to work.” I groaned, eyeing the empty stage.

“Yes it will! Okay, go over the plan one more time.” Issy instructed.

I sighed. “Towards the end of the concert, they’re singing a cover of some secret song, Zayn flips his microphone, I run backstage, tell the security guard who I am, and go onstage.”

Isabel grinned. “I can’t wait! They’re going to be so surprised! It will be so romantic!”

I grimaced. “Why did I agree to this? What if he has a breakdown on stage?”

Issy raised an eyebrow. “I doubt that very much. It’s the last song anyways, so he can finish the concert, and then go backstage for his breakdown.”

I smiled at her. “I guess this is goodbye then.”

She grabbed me in a hug. “Call me as soon as you can.”

I grinned. “You never know, I could be back sooner than you think. I might run away again.”

“Don’t you dare show up at my apartment for at least three months.” She warned.

I laughed, and the audience suddenly erupted with screams. I grinned as five boys ran out on stage. The show was starting.

I sat anxiously throughout the whole show, my eyes flicking from one face to the next, never really hearing the music. Liam’s eyes found mine, once, and he grinned. The girls near us screamed loudly, even after he looked away. I rolled my eyes. One day someone was going to have a heart attack at one of these things.

Eventually, Niall came forward with his mic, and made shushing noises to the crowd.

“Alrighty. We’re getting to the end, but we have one last surprise for you. We’re going to do a cover of the Click Five. Here it is, ‘Jenny’.”

I rolled my eyes. “That’s not even my name.”

Isabel laughed. “Okay. Watch for the signal.”

About halfway through the song, Zayn flipped his microphone into the air and caught it again, causing the fans to cheer.

I turned to Isabel and gave her a big hug. “Thank you for everything.”

She smiled. “Keep in touch. Now, go get ‘em!”

I took a deep breath, and ran around the back of the stage. I didn’t have to say anything to the security guard, he just took one look at my face and opened the door for me. I smiled at him and ran up the dark steps to the side of the stage. I smiled to myself in the darkness. This was going to be dramatic all right.

Louis was singing the last few lines of the song now.

First you say you won't

then you say you will

you keep me hanging on

and we're not moving on

or standing still

Jenny, you've got me on my knees

Jenny, it's killing me

Liam spotted me and winked subtly. I took a deep breath, and was about to step into the light when something stopped me. A girl had just appeared in the shadows on the other side of the stage. I frowned. How had a fan gotten onstage? Then she stepped into the light.

My stomach flipped and my hands flew to my mouth.

It was the girl from Harry’s room.

I started shaking as I stepped back into the darkness. No. I wasn’t going to run away again. I stood there frozen, watching with horror as the girl walked closer and closer to Harry.

Louis saw her first. He went pale, turned off his mic and started frantically whispering in the ear of a security guard standing at his feet. Zayn and Liam were talking to the audience, but they stopped and looked quizzically at Louis. The security guard jumped up on stage and was joined by another. They started walking over to Harry. I saw his face scrunch up in confusion, he still hadn’t seen her. The security men brushed past him and each grabbed one of the girl’s arms, then dragged her off between them. She went rather willingly, probably not wanting to make a scene. Harry’s face paled when he recognized her, then he suddenly ran off backstage.

Everyone else just stood there for a moment, kind of dumbfounded. It was Louis who broke the silence, whispering something in Liam’s ear. Liam seemed to come back to life and turned to the crowd with a smile.

“This is what happens when you throw your phone on stage. It takes a lot of work to get it back. So please keep your phones down there.” Liam said, trying to laugh it off.

“Right guys, we’re going to do one last song for you tonight!” Niall said, and the audience erupted in cheers.

I blinked. Okay. I needed to find Harry. I peered around in the darkness. Damn. The only way I could get to the other side of the stage was either going around the outside, which was probably blocked off, or by going straight across the stage.

I sighed, and stepped onto the stage. Nobody saw me at first, but then someone started screaming my name. Louis turned around with a confused expression, and he saw me. His mouth fell open in shock, and he dropped his microphone. I winced as it hit the ground with an explosive sounding bang. That was probably expensive. Louis’ mouth was moving as he stared at me, but no words were coming out.

I smiled, did a theatrical bow, then ran off the stage after Harry.

The first person I saw was Paul. He looked at me with a purely exhausted expression, and pointed to his left. I gave him a quick smile and ran down the dimly lit hallway. There were numerous unmarked doors lining the hall, but only one of them was open. I figured that was my best bet.

I poked my head in and was about to knock on the door when I saw who was inside. For the second time in only a few minutes, my heart sped up and my stomach dropped.

Harry was standing in the middle of the room, his pale, sickly face showing no emotion. He had his left arm outstretched, the sleeve rolled up to his elbow.

And in his right hand was a knife.
