With Love From Josh

"Sidney, another letter."
I heard mom shout from downstairs. "I'll be right down"
I shouted back. This happens almost every morning. It's Saturday morning. Downstairs I kissed my mother good morning and took my letter.
"Oh my gosh, it's from Josh!"
I said with fake excitement. It's really hard to do that early in the mornings when I'm so not in the mood for acting. With my sleepy eyes I tried to look in love as I went back upstairs with the letter clutched to my chest.
"Isn't he a darling?"
I heard my mom say to my little sister. If only they knew. Nathaniel was driving me crazy with his new method of contact. Nath is my boss and my boss is Josh. You are not confused are you? You see, I'm a detective working for this man called Nathaniel Gunn. He is my boss. Boss of everyone in the agency. We were working on some high profile case which required constant contact. So he called me to his office one morning . I can recall clearly what transpired.✨
Nath "Sit down Sidney"
I sat down and greeted him. He didn't respond. He just continued talking from where he left of.
Nath " As you might have realized, we all need CC(that means constant contact). With you especially since I've placed you at the front for this case. You would tell your parents you have a new boyfriend. His name is Josh and he leaves far away. I leave the where and how to you to make up. He would send you letters through the mail almost everyday. Now, I'm Josh and every letter would actually be a set of instructions for you and your team. You would carry out my orders immediately and without delay of any sort. The envelope won't really be from another country of course. I have a guy who would get the necessary stamps and deliver the letter to you every 3 days or so."
He paused to take a sip of water from the glass in front of him. I knew he was only making sure his words had gone into my brain with 100% download.
"Do you understand?" He asked.
"Yes sir" I replied although I wasn't amused about the "new boyfriend" aspect of things. Why not a new business partner or something?What would I tell Dexter when he comes to visit my parents and I? My parents could mess the whole plan up!
Nath "You do understand Sidney, that you have to break up with that boy. Dexter right?"
I was in shock. That was uncalled for. However fearing my boss so much I didn't say exactly that.
Sidney" I don't quite understand sir. Is it very necessary? If you don't mind my asking."
Nath " Yes it is necessary. The letters would start arriving tomorrow. You have four days to end your relationship with Dexter. You may leave now. I have more important things to do"
Sidney" Yes sir"
And with that I was out of his office. It took me one week to successfully break up with poor Dexter but since my boss never mentioned it I was glad he didn't punish me for not using his schedule.
I loved Dexter but I loved my job more. Disobeying an order from Nathaniel Gunn whether given directly or indirectly was just suicidal. It simply meant you didn't need your job anymore and with the well known rumour going round that "those who leave never live" was enough to make everyone do almost anything if not everything that Nath ordered.✨
Unfortunately as you can see, that case was solved but Nath's or should I say Josh's letters kept coming. Not having the nerve to face my boss about this. I continued living my life with my imaginary boyfriend, My "dear Josh".
