Two

The next day at work Emily’s words kept ringing in her head, “You know what? I no longer pray that you get a man, you don’t need a man cause in this state you would chase him away with your dark brooding and miserably terrifying soul, you need to come to terms with your past and learn to love yourself before someone else can love you.” Emily was right she realised she didn’t even like herself, she didn’t like her height or her tummy, she didn’t like her nose or her eyes, she thought she was fat and chubby, her breasts were a little too big for her liking, her hips a little to slim and her butt a little too rounded. She needed to come to terms with who she was and begin to like herself. For once she needed to look in the mirror and actually like what she was seeing. She could not change who she was and how she looked, anyone who didn’t not appreciate her as she was to hell with them. If she didn’t like her life then maybe it was time to do something about it.

“I’m sorry Nicolette I know I should have given you at least three months’ notice, but please understand I really need to do this.” Amy was sitting opposite her boss watching as she read her resignation letter. She had decided the first step to her self-actualisation was quitting her job and giving a try at something that she not only loved doing but something she was also good at, designing.  She hoped Nicolette would understand but right now she didn’t look like she was pleased at all.

“So when did you come to this decision?” Nicolette asked

“Actually an hour ago,” Amy replied.

“So you mean to tell me you want to leave your job on a whim? ” Nico was angry and she stood up abruptly pushing her chair back violently. She had known Amy for the last seven years she was good at her job and could have been brilliant if she was half as passionate about it as Nico was. Nico knew Amy was the one who should be sitting behind this desk but she had never bothered to apply when this position arose, everyone knew she would have gotten it if she had. Ever since she had known her Amy was always bubbling with laughter and full of humour but she never took anything seriously enough. She was a procrastinator and she didn’t mind missing out on certain things in life. Nico had known that something was wrong for the past two months Amy hadn’t been acting herself, she looked so miserable most of the time but she had hoped it was just a passing phase but this was taking it too far. What could have brought on this pain in Amy’s eyes as far as she knew she was single there had been no one since the meltdown of her last relationship three years ago. It had been painful but Amy had been stoic about it, everyone in the office had cried on her behalf everyone  expect her, she had continued as if nothing was wrong but only those who were close to her knew how much it had cost her, that a piece of her had died that day. Now what was this all about she wondered as her heart softened towards her and she tried a gentler approach to make her see reason.

“Amy I know you have been under a lot of stress lately, I’m not sure what has been happening in your life but let’s not be too rash to make such a decision. Let’s say you take the week or two off them when you come back we can talk about it if you still feel the same.”

“I have made my decision Nico and I’m not going to change my mind, I’m sorry.” Amy was not sorry that she had quit her job she was sorry she had to do this to Nicolette.

“Is there anything I can do to change your mind?” Nicolette tried one more time.

“No,” was the short reply.

“Ok then, good luck and if you ever feel like coming back don’t hesitate to come in. I’m going to really miss you Amy.” There both knew Nicolette was talking about work, they were never  close enough to be real friends and Nicolette would not miss Amy ‘s company but she was definitely going to miss her brilliant touch in this department , would she find someone like her ever, no, she thought not.
