Thirteen

Antonio was having a terrible day, to make matters worse the flight was delayed and now he had to wait two more hours to get back home. He had wanted to be in time to welcome the newlyweds back home. He still could not believe it had been a month and half since the wedding, he had been so busy and time had flown by so fast. He wished he had followed his mother’s advice and used the private jet, public transport was always so unreliable and in his world time was money.  His phone rang and he was annoyed when he saw the caller ID.

“Pamela what do you want.” He said as a way of greeting.

“Come on Toni babe, not even a hi, how are you?”

“If you wanted niceties you should have called my secretary then.”

“Ok I just wanted to know when you’ll be back; maybe we can go out for dinner sometime, have some fun.”

“No thanks and Pam please don’t call me again.” With that Antonio ended the call and switched off the phone. This woman was so persistent and Toni once again wondered why he had even slept with her. He was tired of these stupid women, he was tired of these one night stands, and he was tired of appearing in magazines with these beautiful untouchable women. He remembered the last conversation he had had with his mother before he had left.

“Antonio, you are not getting any younger, don’t you think it’s about time you find a good woman and settle down. That company is not everything; you need someone to stand by you, someone to bring out the best in you. Your father and I need to see some grandchildren before we die.”

“Mum I’m not ready for that yet and anyway I haven’t met someone as wonderful as you, I promise you if I find her I’ll marry her and don’t worry Belinda should be giving you lots of grandchildren soon.” Toni said ending the conversation by standing up and kissing his mother goodbye.

“Antonio Alexander Gordon you will not dismiss me like one of those sluts you are always with. Do you think I don’t know what you do; I am your mother it’s my business to know. I have let this go on for far too long because your father thought you will come around. These women that you are using and breaking their hearts could be your sister. There have families and parents who love them, they have feelings. The tears that they cry are being collected in a bottle and I tell you one day they will work against you. Take a leap of faith my son and give someone your heart.” Melanie Gordon was now in tears looking at this handsome man that she had raised where did she go wrong where had they gone wrong. He was so hard and unloving.

“What guarantee do I have that my heart won’t be broken?” Antonio asked.

“None.”

“Then that’s stupid

“No son it’s not, it’s the only way to really live.” Melanie said and kissed his son goodbye. For once Antonio felt the bitter end of being dismissed himself.

Now with two hours to kill Antonio kept on replaying that conversation in his head over and over again. His mother had never ever mentioned or talked to him about his relationships before. He had never even realised she knew about all the women in his life. It was shameful and his parents didn’t deserve to hear such evil about their son. They had raised him right and instilled in him good principles in life. Where had he gone wrong, he knew that his parents were probably blaming themselves for his behaviour towards women but they were not to blame? He knew where it had all started and he had only himself to blame for being stupid. He was long dead now and there was no point in making all of womankind suffer for her sins and his mother was right the only way to really live was to take a leap of faith. It was time he let himself fall in love again and when he thought about love there was only one word that came to mind and it was Amelia.
