[Part 1]

“Your baby is growing all fine and healthy, Mrs. Casanova.” Dr. Renee Devaux pointed to the monitor screen, perfectly manicured finger pressed lightly on the LED screen. “There, you can see the head. The limbs are beginning to grow, as you see from here… and here.”

Mrs. Lexi Casanova felt as the sensor lightly rubbed over the petroleum jelly placed over her baby bump, but delighted eyes looked over eagerly at the screen, barely making out the shape of what was about to be the most important thing in her life in seven months’ time.

“Are you sure?” She asked, sounding slightly afraid. Dr. Devaux only gave the pregnant lady a charming smile that was set to soothe even the most terrified of souls. She had learnt that smile from young, she always had to be the one looking after her easily-scared little brother.

“You and the baby will both be fine, Mrs. Casanova. There is nothing to worry about. Just keep yourself free of worries, and keep a healthy diet, and the baby’s going to be as fine and beautiful as you.” Dr. Devaux assured lightly, having gone through many first-time mothers before. As a gynecologist, it was only her job to make pregnancy as easy and worry-free as possible for the women who appear at her clinic. Every woman who came to her was a woman afraid of the future, and it was her job to make them feel better and confident at being a good mother.

“Thank you, Dr. Devaux.” Mrs. Casanova’s face was very obviously relieved at her assurance as she continued moving the sensor around the slowly forming bump, making sure that there were no problems with the fetus.

“Just call me Renee.” She replied with a friendly tone. Her friendliness had always been frowned upon when she was still studying, but she would be damned before she let this amazing smile of her be lost behind a poker-face. Renee Devaux knew that she had a beautiful smile, and she loved to make people smile with it. She recognized that the world out there was bleak and dark, black and cold, and sometimes, all some people needed was someone smiling at them.

It was only the least she could do to smile and offer a hand to help.

“Just call me Lexi, in this case.” Mrs. Casanova replied equally easy, and they exchanged gentle smiles at each other. Lexi Casanova was approximately two years older than her, but looking at the pregnant woman lying on the bed in front of her, Renee Devaux could not resist but regard her as a motherly figure.

“We are done.” Renee announced shortly after, wiping the sensor clean of the jelly as she turned the machine off, passing the pregnant lady a napkin to wipe the substance off her stomach herself. “There is no problem with your child at all; no worries.”

The smile she received in reply was enough to brighten the world as Lexi wiped the last of the jelly off, and rolled her beautiful pink silk shirt back down over her baby bump. The both of them moved from the small cramped room back to the more spacious office, as Renee took a seat automatically behind the desk, picking up the pen and filling up the report on her desk.

“I will be prescribing you some pills to ease on the morning sickness.” She informed, scribbling something quickly at the bottom of the page. “But if it’s beginning to stop, you can let up on them. Too much of the pills may harm the baby, so take them in small amounts.”

There was a sound of acknowledgement from the first-time mother, and so Renee didn't look up from filling up the report. Sometimes she thought that the beauty of her job was often drowned by the many paperwork she had to fill up to ensure that everything she did was documented, and could be used to protect her in future.
