[Part 11]
Renee wasn’t sure when she had fallen asleep, but it became apparent to her that she had been sleeping when she woke up blurrily. The bright lights that she’d fallen asleep to was dimmed now, and she cracked her eyes a little to see the same surrounding with darker lighting. She saw the man she had been waiting for still at his table, still hunched seriously over his work on the desk. His fingers still flew quickly over the laptop, and the sounds of his furious typing filled the otherwise silence of the room.
She wondered how long she’d slept, but didn’t feel like getting up. Renee wasn’t sure what had woken her up, but she wanted nothing more than to fall back into the comfortable clutches of sleep at the moment. She had had a long, terrifying night and sleep was very much welcomed.
She shifted a little to a more comfortable position, feeling a strange soft material brush over her shoulders that felt foreign. She hadn’t been wearing anything to cover her arms when she had been sitting at Jean-Jacques’s couch. She pulled the material instinctively closer around her, aware of its length covering her all the way to her hips. The warmth that came along with the material made her smile lazily against it, and she breathed it in.
The distantly familiar smell of mint came to her nose, and she got the general idea that it was Jean-Jacques’s coat around her. That sweet man; he had been scared of her getting cold?
Renee clutched the front of his coat tightly in her hands, wrapping herself in his coat, his warmth and his scent. It was childish of her to do it, but she could no longer deny that Jean-Jacques signified everything that was safe for her now. When she was with him, she felt as if she could take on the world with him watching her back. Even though he hadn’t said anything about him willing to protect her to that extent, Renee still somehow was extremely glad to have gotten to know him. The words from Louis and Dante hadn’t done him any justice; they had never said he was such a man fierce to protect everyone he cared for.
They never told her how much being around him felt safe.
Wrapped in the warmth and safety of her protector-of-the-night, Renee fell back into sleep again.

“Renee? Wake up.” She distantly drifted through her dreams to hear a familiar voice calling her from far away. She shifted, clutched the material around her closer, and tried to fall back into the sweet dream that she had been having before she drifted out.
She distantly heard a sigh, then felt the warm presence near her leave. She frowned a little at the cold that came following the departure of that comfortable warmth, but kept adamantly to her unconsciousness.
“Louis, would you mind giving me the address of Renee Devaux’s residence?” The soft voice asked far away.
“I would search for it, but we’re almost at dawn. I don’t want to spend extra minutes searching.” Jean-Jacques’s voice seemed understanding of any question that Louis asked, explaining in a soft voice. Renee smiled distantly, remembering how that soft voice had answered her every question about vampires and the war with the Russians. Jean-Jacques had made it clear that if he could, he would leave her out of their war. But until he was sure that the Russians had taken their attention of her to focus on him and his vampire friends, he would have to send someone to watch over her.
“She is asleep at my office, Louis. I have no desire to leave her here.” The vindictive tone was a little strange with his hushed voice, though she could imagine him using it to Dante. She got the general idea that Dante was always treated like the mischievous child with tons of trouble following after him –and that both the Frenchmen around him were tortured by his endless rounds of trouble.
