[Part 12]

His amusement came from her interesting reaction, as he watched the woman open and close her mouth in surprise, unable to come up with the words to voice her thoughts properly.

“Is it that much of a shock?” He asked after a long moment of silence, raising a single brow at her. The myriad of emotions that he had seen on her face ever since walking in had been amusing, but as her emotions entered into the shocked spectrum, Jean-Jacques was beginning to wonder if there was any end to the level of amusement that she would give to him simply by watching her face.

“I-I… B-But you’re the president of the company!” Renee spluttered, throwing up her hands as if it could better display her utter shock.

“President of the company doesn’t mean I can’t be out on the field, Renee. I cannot spare any other hands to be attached on your case –isn’t it any better time than this to be your bodyguard?” He reasoned. These reasons would be the very same reasons he would need to vindicate his spur-of-the-moment actions with Zanetta. He hadn’t let his vice-president in on his decision yet, but was undoubtedly going to find out about it soon. Jean-Jacques did not look forward to his imminent argument with Zanetta, but the woman had told him to watch over himself and not do anything dangerous and stupid. Taking care of Renee meant he wasn’t going to go hunting Skalov in Russia, right? He could make it a convincing argument later on with Zanetta.

“Don’t you have other things to do? The woman in your office yesterday didn’t seem to like your association with me.” Renee’s reply was more confident now that she had gotten past her shock, and Jean-Jacques raised another brow at her.

“Zanetta is very protective about the security and safety of our kind, and hasn’t gotten over the craze of Dante’s suicidal moves during the competition; hence her displeasure with him dragging you into the picture too with Skalov. Do not worry; I will sort things out on my end.” Jean-Jacques expressed in a breezing tone, trying his best to appear as if he were unaffected. Worrying Renee again with the problems, or what was an imminent problem, was not something Jean-Jacques desired at the moment.

“But I’m sure you are a busy man in your company. You don’t have to protect me personally, Jean-Jacques. I really appreciate the gesture, but you should really focus on your war with the Russians. You are their strategy-guy, you shouldn’t be wasting your time with me when you should be coming up with plans to end your war.” Renee explained, the worried expression running past her face now as she stepped away, as if the increased distance could deter his determination to protect this strange woman who had somehow ended up in the middle of a war between vampires.

Jean-Jacques suppressed a smirk at her comment about him being his Coven’s ‘Strategy-Guy’, making up for the distance created as he took a measured step forwards, keeping the same initial distance unchanged.

“I will be coming up with plans every single moment as I watch over you. I don’t know how Louis spends his nights watching over you, but I will have to apologize beforehand, for I still have to deal with the company’s works. We won’t be able to hold much conversation, but do not worry; I will be watching over you closely.”

“I don’t mind that.” The woman replied quickly, looking strangely aghast. Jean-Jacques was briefly surprised to see that expression on her face, for the one inconvenienced would be him and not her. Did she really mind the conversations she shared endlessly with Louis? Louis had constantly reported that his work relationship with Renee was going well, for the woman and her little brother had always been welcoming of him, sharing close conversations so much so that Louis had been convinced that he had found another best friend other than Dante. “But it must really be so hard on you! I really don’t mind someone else, Jean-Jacques. Even if he or she is human, I don’t mind. You should just focus on your war.”
