[Part 22]
“Jean-Jacques,” Cian’s strict, commanding voice rang through the busy operating room that Jack had kindly lent them, “Stay and help.”
“I can’t…” He began to protest, saying that he wasn’t a skilled medical personnel, but the look on his Master’s face spoke a million words as he swallowed his fears and anguish, his pain and anger along with his protests. Obeying quickly, he returned back to the operating table, where blood was already dripping to the floor. Dante, for his credit, withdrew quickly from the room and teleported back to deal with the carnage left behind.
“He’s losing a lot of blood.” Jack’s professionalism drifted through as the vampire approached the table from the other side with a few bags of blood marked O positive. “I’m hooking him up to a blood bag to prolong the process, but it isn’t going to be nice.”
“Do what you can to hold him on.” Cian’s reply had a no-nonsense quality that Jean-Jacques rarely ever heard from his Master anymore. He didn’t want to know how Dante had persuaded their Master into agreeing to turn yet another person into a vampire, but Jean-Jacques knew that when Cian agreed to anything, Cian would deliver.
Feeling helplessly bound to the situation, Jean-Jacques did his best to stay out of the way as Cian carefully but efficiently sliced through the blood-soaked shirt of the unconscious man, gently lifting the body up and removing the offending piece of clothing, leaving it on a moving rack at the side.
Dipping a finger into the blood puddle made on the operating table, Cian pressed his thumb on Roger-Luc’s unconscious forehead, leaving a smudge of his own blood, then repeated the same with the man’s palms.
“Vital signs are dropping fast. Whatever you are doing, Cian, you better do it quick. If not, I’m going to have to inject something to delay the process.” Jack’s voice pierced through the highly concentrated work, as Jean-Jacques’s heart leapt to his mouth. Even as a killer, Jean-Jacques couldn’t believe the amount of blood that Roger-Luc had already shed. It would be a miracle if the man survived at all…
Cian drew a line of blood around Roger-Luc’s throat, then cleaned his hand, placing the free palm on Roger-Luc’s forehead. Jean-Jacques held his breath in anticipation as Cian closed his eyes, waiting for something to happen. Jack, for his part, ignored their Coven Master entirely, monitoring the man’s vital signs vigorously while taking the pulse of the dying man.
A wave of dizziness hit Jean-Jacques heavy on the face, and he watched in shock as Jack stumbled on his venture towards the medical table, a hand propped up on the edge with an expression of dread. By pure instilled instincts, Jean-Jacques checked his watch, realizing with a deepening pit in his stomach that sunrise was in five minutes.
“Cian!” Jack’s exclamation didn’t need words for it was understandable what Jack was asking for. There was no way it could happen. There was no way Roger-Luc could be turned into a vampire in time. The process had been described to last for at least an hour. Roger-Luc was running out of time. They were running out of time.
“Jack, you can go.” Cian’s reply was stern and strict, and even though the scientist and resident medic looked very much like he wanted to stay, he didn’t. Jack nodded once to Jean-Jacques, as if trying to convey his apologies of not being able to help out more, then disappeared.
“Jean-Jacques.” Cian called again, as he pressed forwards a little, trying to see what progress had been made. Nothing seemed to be happening, and Roger-Luc only looked paler by every second. The poor man’s lips were almost white, as dread filled Jean-Jacques.
“Take this and stay here with Roger-Luc.” Cian, with a free, unbloodied hand, offered a single tablet that Jean-Jacques was very familiar with. What surprised him was the fact that somehow Cian had gotten his hands on the small stash of Stay Awake Drug when Jean-Jacques had made sure the drug to be kept under extremely high securities.
