[Part 9]
Renee was still trembling and shaking like a loose leaf in a hurricane, but at least she had calmed down terribly. If it hadn’t been for her tight control, she was sure that she would have fainted or swooned like a girl. But swooning or falling unconscious wasn’t what she wanted right now, because she would miss the amazing things that were happening before her eyes.
She didn’t want to know if the sight of appearing and disappearing people was amazing, but at least she felt as if she were standing at the edge of an abyss, peering in and getting a glimpse of the heaven inside. She knew somehow that she was going to fall into that abyss soon, but at the moment, she stood trembling at the metaphorical abyss, looking in at another world.
There was another stab of pain, and she jerked a little, then gave an apologetic look to her nurse. Vanda had somehow taken a shine to her immediately –perhaps it was the knowledge that somehow she had been Dante’s and Lexi’s savior –and had sat her down immediately on the couch with a no-nonsense attitude before disappearing somewhere and reappearing with a first aid box.
At first Renee had been confused about the function of bringing a first aid box, but when Vanda’s eyes turned to her forehead, she had only then remembered that she’d been knocked out. She hadn’t felt much of the pain –thanks to adrenaline –but now that it was getting alcohol over it, she could feel the sharp stings every now and then.
“You’re such a darling.” Vanda said, even as she leaned forward into Renee’s personal space, gently tapping the blood away with a cotton ball. “I could kiss you until you die!”
“Um…” Renee bit her bottom lip a little unsurely. “Thanks?”
“I’m not sure if that’s the best way to express your gratitude.” Jean-Jacques interrupted gently, and Renee was surprised to find a cup of steaming hot chocolate displayed in front of her. She looked up –to Vanda’s irritated sound of annoyance –to see the Frenchman who had saved them all holding on to the cup with a faint smile.
“Thank you.” She replied gratefully, reaching for the cup, but her hands were still shaking. At the sight of her trembling hand reaching for the cup, the faint smile faded away a little, and he moved the cup away from her reach, leaving it on the low table in front of her instead. She clenched her trembling hands into fists, hiding them embarrassedly.
“But I’m not kidding. Yeah, she could have just left Dante to die –I don’t care about him. But she saved Lexi and her baby!” Vanda exclaimed, swiping another alcohol swab over her wound, and earning another wince.
“You do honestly have to stop picking on Dante.” Jean-Jacques replied moving out of Vanda’s way when the woman changed angles and began on another area of her wound. Renee wondered how big the gash on her forehead was. “He was in a bad shape trying to protect them.”
“So what? Look at you! You faced down the Russians alone, and came out with just a few scrapes!” Vanda exclaimed, and though Renee would have liked to put in a good word for Dante too, she was afraid of pissing her nurse off. Right now, Vanda could pour the entire bottle of alcohol on her and kill her with the pain.
“I took the Russians by surprise. Dante was the one taken by surprise in their case.” Jean-Jacques excused stepping away from where they were on the couch.
When Jean-Jacques had teleported with her hand in his, he’d brought her to the entrance of a large mansion that seemed to be located somehow in the middle of a forest. There hadn’t been any cars at the front, waiting to be used, but Renee had guessed that they didn’t have to have cars if they travelled by teleportation. She wasn’t sure how she knew, but her instincts had told her that pretty much everyone living in the mansion was ‘special’ –as Jean-Jacques had called it.
