[Part 23]
“Breathe, Breathe, Breathe, Push!” Dr. Devaux said strongly, doing the breathing exercises aloud so as to guide her patient through. Her patient, though, screamed with the force of contracting muscles.
Renee was in her forte, as she watched the progress going on between spread legs.
“You’re getting there, Lexi! Come on, just a few more! Breathe, Breathe, Breathe, Push!” She motivated again, ordering the nurse at her side to prepare for the arrival of the newborn. The cord had to be cut, and things had to be done, but the process was largely smooth.
Granted, the fact that Lexi’s water bag had burst in bed, and given the woman’s angry mouthy comments at a certain man who had impregnated her; the ride towards the hospital had been spent with Dante enduring the screaming and threats of her tearing his head off his shoulders, while Renee did her best to calm her best friend down. Crowning had happened almost too fast for Lexi, but it was going well as the ER had responded well to her call, providing her with a delivery theatre quickly and efficiently.
“Tessoro, it’s going to be fine! I love you, darling, please listen to Renee!” Dante pleaded, wincing at the strength at which his wife was holding on to his forearm, as if he were a cushion to grab on.
“Dante! I swear I’m going to… I’m going to… shove garlic down your throat and stake you in the morning!” Lexi screamed as she pushed, digging her nails into Dante’s forearm. For the man’s sake, at least he didn’t complain about the verbal and physical abuse rained down on him as he looked almost as pained as his wife was.
“Just one more, Lexi! You’re going to be fine! I can see his legs.” Renee offered again, gingerly, and carefully handling the baby who had finally begun to stir. Very carefully orientating the newborn to face upwards instead of down, Renee watched as the baby opened his tiny mouth. Beautiful melodious cries came sounding out, as Dante’s prayers were answered.
“Okay, Lexi, you have to push once more, and I swear it’s going to be the last time. Give it your all, and I’ll do everything to make sure he’s all fine and healthy, okay?” Renee said, and felt more than saw as Dante braced himself for the worst of his wife’s childbirth abuse.
“DANTE I HATE YOU AND YOUR STUPID CASANOVA FACE!” Lexi screamed, giving a strong push this time, freeing the newborn from his mother’s womb. Working quickly to make sure the newborn didn’t get chills, Renee and the nurses worked efficiency in cutting the umbilical cord, as the newborn was quickly passed to be cleaned and checked.
“Dante, you should leave the room now. We’ll be out with your baby soon.” Renee instructed, watching as the man carefully pry his forearm from his wife’s death grip, wincing at the blood trails made by Lexi’s strong grip. The tears had already gathered at the corner of his eyes, as Dante mumbled something that sounded relatively like thanks to the nurses, before moving out of the room.
“Thank god it’s over…” Lexi’s sigh was lethargic, as Renee checked her patient’s vitals, making sure that Lexi was still going strong. While Lexi wasn’t the strongest of patients that Renee had had before, Lexi was still a fine woman with generally little complications in terms of medical history and duration of childbearing. “I swear I’m going to stab Dante’s pretty-boy face tonight.”
Renee stifled laughter, struggling to remain in her professional work as she sutured Lexi’s gash close, then gave light sedatives to ensure that the woman could get optimal rest. The newborn baby was quickly cleared from any major problems, weighed and measured to be a very healthy, cute and pretty young boy with beautiful melodious cries. Renee found that the boy had inherited his father’s pretty face, as well as his parents’ amazing voice, and could only smile at the future for the little boy with such loving parents.
