[Part 7]
Renee was always a doctor who cared very much for her patient’s well-being, and being a gynecologist meant that she would always be there to witness a woman’s happiest moments. Besides being a gynecologist, Renee thought, the only job that could allow her to witness such happy moments was being a wedding planner.
She often felt accomplished when her patients went through pregnancy and childbirth safe and sound, when they smiled and thanked her.
It was equally satisfying when they cried in joy at the sight of an image of their unborn child on the LED screen when she did ultrasound scans.
Dante, who had never been there with his wife during the checkups, had finally appeared, and as he looked with the wide-eyed wonder of a first-time would-be father, Renee held back a smile of her own as she lightly brushed the sensor over Lexi’s bump. The silence of the room provided Dante and Lexi their own moments of joy, and Renee only remained silent as she checked out for any telltale signs of problem in the fetus.
She opened her mouth to announce the normalcy of their steadily growing baby, but caught herself just in time, for she turned to see Lexi’s hand holding on to Dante’s, the couple sharing a look that was of pure unbridled love. For a single woman to be witnessing such a scene before her, Renee felt a stab of jealousy and loneliness, but refused to hold on to that feeling for long. It was her own choice to not find a man to accompany her in life; she had no rights to feel envious.
Besides, there was no need for her to be envious, for her father could easily support her for the rest of her life even if she decided to stop working. She could stick to Roger-Luc forever, and even if her little brother married, she would be the old annoying sister-in-law in place of their mother, fighting against his would-be wife for his attention.
Renee neglected the fact that she had decided to set her sights on Louis.
The days and weeks that he spent guarding her, though, had made her initial infatuation fade. While the attractiveness of a handsome man was still there, Renee found that she could not compare to his light and fire for life. Louis craved life, craved for clothes and fashion. Louis needed to belong in a world of excitement, a world where only the most determined, ambitious and brave survived in luxury. Renee wanted a normal life, where she and her future-husband would be just another pair living in just another street, working normal moderate-stress jobs.
It was obvious that they would not click well if they ever got together, and even if they decided to get romantically involved, the problems would only amount on their heads until Renee would eventually decide that she cannot take it anymore.
“We’re sorry.” Lexi apologized sheepishly, withdrawing her hand from Dante’s grasp as if only realizing their display of love in front of a stranger. “We didn’t mean to put you out.”
“No, it’s okay.” Renee regained her soft smile, leaving her problems of singlehood in the wind. She would just leave love for the future, when she got more desperate for a man. For now, she could just wait and pray for the Man of her Life to eventually waltz into her life and sweep her off her feet like how Dante had obviously done Lexi. “You two are really sweet together.”
“Thanks, Cara mia.” Dante purred. Renee didn’t know much Italian, but she knew enough that Dante had called her ‘my darling’, as she blushed slightly. “How are you and Louis getting along?”
It took her a short while to remember that Louis and Dante were supposed to be best of friends, and that Renee had been the one to invite Lexi and Dante over to her house so as to allow Louis a day off. Her father would be disturbed if she was left without a protector, so she’d insisted that Dante come along –for Daddy Pierre had already witnessed Dante’s protecting skills, hadn’t he?
