Morning Runs
First days of school are always exciting. There's a certain feel in the air like anything could happen. If Cecilia was still here that would probably be true. She always brought my life excitement, some anxiety but mostly excitement. As hard as I tried to break my mind out of this negativity I couldn't. How could you stay positive when you lose your best friend?
Once I wake up I quickly get changed into my running clothes. This has been a daily routine of mine since the start of summer. It was the most important part of my day. I found peace in those runs. I started really slow and couldn't run farther than a mile. Within a month I was running at an 8 minute mile pace which encouraged me to run a 5k every day.
The moment I get down the stairs I notice Carters figure in the kitchen. I slip past him quickly hoping he won't say a word as I pull my headphones out of my pocket.
"You leaving for school already?" He asks me confused. His voice coming out lower than usually.
I turn towards him feeling a blush come on as I shake my head. "I'm going for a run... we're still carpooling?"
He nods stepping closer to me. "You do this everyday?" He asks looking me up and down. Instinctively I cross my arms feeling uncomfortable with his eyes all over me.
"Yeah I feel crazy if I don't go." I give him a small smile as I look down at the time on my phone. "I better head out so I have enough time to be ready."
"Alright... I'll have breakfast ready for you when you get back."
"You really don't have to Carter." I mumble shuffling my feet a bit.
"I want to." He smiles at me. "Now go before you make us both late for school."
I laugh a little before heading out the door putting on my go to playlist. I take a deep breath stretching my legs out a bit before starting my run. I start out slowly before bringing my legs to a steady pace. My mind races as I run down the block. It stops on Carter and how nice he's been towards me.
He's never been rude to me or even that nice. I was just there in his life like a piece of furniture in his life. You past it everyday but you never notice it for the beauty it holds. Now though things were different I could feel it every time he's been around me. He looks at me like I'm brand new.
I check my Nike run app surprised that I had already run 2 miles. I was so trapped in my thoughts of Carter I had no clue. I turn back and pick up my pace.
The run back to the house is harder. I'm not lost in my thoughts like I was. Instead I'm taking in the sunrise and the clouds around me.
"There's a breakfast burrito for you on the counter." I hear Carters voice yell down to me from upstairs. I smile grabbing the burrito and a paper towel before heading up the stairs to Cecilia's room.
I use to think of her room as mine but now that she's gone it felt strange. The air was stale and any sign of life was gone now. I shake the feeling off as I walk into her on suite bathroom to shower.
I grab a white towel from the rack wrapping it around my body before going back to her room where my first day of school outfit is laid out. I picked light was skinny jeans with holes in the knees and a maroon top. Nothing to crazy just the way I liked it.
I brush out my hair and decide on letting it air dry. My hairs naturally wavy and most days it has the perfect waves. As I finish brush my hair I hear the door open.
"You like the burrito?" Carter asks me as he stands in the doorway of the bathroom with his usually smirk.
"Yeah it was good I like the tomatoes that added a nice touch." I nod putting my brush back in my bag.
"Thanks it was actually a tradition...." he trails off a little looking down. "Cecilia never liked my moms breakfast she would usually make hot cereal or oatmeal... so we started experimenting and ended up with the recipe. We only made it on big mornings like the first day of school or a big exam."
"I never knew that. You miss her too huh?" I ask feeling my heart race as he green eyes find mine.
He shrugs putting his hands in his front pockets. "Yeah but she seemed really happy so I had to let her go."
"I understand." I nod suddenly feeling awkward as he blocks my path to my shoes. "She's probably having the time of her life and we're stuck a school."
"At least we have each other..." he mumbles look down at his feet. I blush again as I scoot past feeling his arm brush against mine. I start putting my shoes on as I notice him stand up straighter. "You know I was serious about looking after you."
"I appreciate really. Who knew we'd get along so well." I give him a smile before grabbing my backpack. "Now lets go do this thing."
