The Lookout

The older you get the more you realize the small insignificant decisions you make impact your journey. The moment I shook Carter's hand I knew that was one of those moments. I just didn't know how it could possibly change the trajectory of my life. I just knew it would.

As the last bell for school rings signaling the end of day I slowly gather my stuff. Normally I would try to get out as quickly as possible but I had to wait for Carter to take me back to his house to get my car. I slowly make my way down to the field to wait while the team practices. As I turn the corner I spot Sam and some of her cheerleader friends surrounding a couple of lockers. Before they see me I hear my name brought up and a couple of laughs.

I find myself hiding in an alcove listening in. "I swear Carter has a thing for her Sam." One of them says as I rest my back against the wall feeling a buzz in my ear as I listen hard.

"He spent his whole lunch looking for her. There has to be something going on girl. This is the longest you've been broken up." Another voice says as I try to imagine what kind of faces they are making.

"It's only been 3 weeks... we're suppose to hang out later tonight when he finishes up things with the guys." Sam's voice comes out sounding defeated. I bite my lip instantly feeling guilty. I knew the drama was coming but I was hoping it wouldn't be so quick. "Plus Cecilia told him to watch after her... he's just being nice."

There's a few giggles from the group. "What is she a child?" Another girl says.

"Stop... Henley's really nice." Sam says bringing a smile to my face. That's why I always liked her she wasn't the typical pretty girl. "She has no friends.... she's not trying to steal Carter from me." There's a few huffs before everything becomes silent again. I wait a few moments before peaking out seeing that I'm all alone once again.

I sigh continuing my route to the field. Sam was definitely right about one thing. There was no chance of me stealing Carter from anyone. "Yo Run Girl!" I hear from behind me as I'm walking down the asphalt towards the field.

"I have a name." I remark turning around to see Lewis walking towards me with a smug expression on his face.

"I'm sorry. I didn't catch it earlier." He shrugs sticking his hands in his pants.

"Henley." I mumble before glancing back at the football field.

"That's cute... whatcha doing here so late?" He says looking me up and down.

"Carters my ride. I was gonna go wait for him to finish practice."

"Want some company? I know I come off as an asshat but I've been told I'm good company." He says laughing a little.

I raise an eyebrow at him contemplating the options. "Yeah come on then." I reply shrugging turning back towards the field.

Before I know it he's matching my strides. We're silent until we find seats on the bleachers. I rest my backpack in my lap as I scan the field for Carter. "so the rumors are that Cecilia ran off because she's pregnant..." Lewis starts off. I start laughing before he can finish shaking my head.

As soon as my laughter dies down I look over at him. "Not even close." I manage to get out as I try to catch my breath.

"Then why isn't she here anymore but Carter is?" He asks seriously causing me to look back at the field.

"It's not really my place to say plus it's none of your business." I mumble out as my eyes make contact with Carter's. Instead of his usual smile he looks at me disappointedly before getting back into formation.
