Relief
After what seems like hours he drops his stare scratching the back of his head. "You can tell me..." He stammers dropping my hand out of his. I watch his features carefully hoping to see a monster in him. Instead I see a boy who truly cared about what was going on in my mind. I open my mouth a few times but can't seem to let the words flow off my tongue.
Until finally his eyes meet mine again begging me to tell him. "Something happened to me years ago." I mumble feeling awkward as we stand in-between our cars in the parking lot of the pizzeria. "This probably isn't the best place to talk about it."
"Where do you wanna go then?" He asks as I glance down at my phone. The screen illuminates with the time 1:30. School was just letting out and I knew he had planes with Sam.
"We can talk about it another time." I state firmly before putting my phone away.
"I think we should talk about it now." He replies just a firmly as me. I knew in that moment he was not gonna back down. At this point I had to tell him.
"Don't you have plans?" I question shuffling my feet a bit feeling anxiety starting to raise up.
"They can wait. Meet me at my house my parents won't be home for a while." He keeps his eyes on me.
"I should get home..." I trail off keeping my eyes away from his.
"Tough shit. You're coming with me even if I have to force you in my car." He states crossing his arms across his chest. I let out a sigh giving in nodding. "Good I'll see you there." He gives me a small smile before walking around to the drivers side of his car.
I get in mine closing the door as I feel my whole body start to shake. Today was definitely not what I pictured. I should've just stayed in school and suffered in silence like I normally would. I wouldn't find myself here about to spill my guts to my best friends brother.
The whole ride to Carter's house I had to talk myself down from losing him and going home. I knew he wouldn't let me though he would find me. We pull up to his house minutes later I take a deep breath telling myself to hold it together before getting out following Carter inside as silence came over us again.
He gestures for me to follow him upstairs. I take the usual turn towards Cecilia's room like I was always use to. Carter clears his throat. "This way." He mumbles seemingly lost in his own thoughts as well.
I silently follow him feeling my heart beat fast in my chest as he opens the door. I half expected to see a mess all over the place but it was the opposite. Everything was neatly organized and his bed was perfectly made.
He sits in his desk chair scooting it across the hardwood floor to his bed. I take a seat on his queen sized bed feeling out of place in his room. "I'm sorry." He finally lets out looking in my direction but not quite at me.
"I'm scared." I state honestly feeling the tension between us dissipate just a little. "I've never told anyone this... not even Cecilia. I thought I had gotten over all this until Lily came up to me before school started."
He rolls his eyes leaning his back against the chair. "What'd she do?"
"It doesn't really matter... I don't care what she said to me it's just triggered me I guess." I shrug my voice coming out as a whisper. Carter nods keeping his eyes steady on me.
Before I know it I'm letting everything out telling him every detail of the incident that happened almost 4 years ago. I tell him how much fear I lived with and the shame I felt for something that really wasn't my fault. By the end he was holding onto me as if I was a fragile newborn baby trying to protect me from all the threats surrounding me.
