I parked my truck and climbed out, staring at the map of the university. It was my first day alone in Chicago so I had no clue where anything was or where I was going. I stared at the map as I walked, trying to figure out how to get the Quad. That's where I was supposed to go to get my schedule and dorm info.
Suddenly I wasn't walking anymore. I was on my back on the concrete. I huffed in annoyance and looked up. I found a blonde haired girl staring down at me with worry in her blue eyes. I groaned as I tried to stand up, feeling a dull throb in my lower back.
"Oh God! I'm so sorry! I wasn't paying attention and I ran you over. I'm really sorry."
She grabbed my hands and pulled me to my feet handing me my map back. I half-smiled and took it gratefully.
"It's fine. I was distracted too. Do you think you could direct me to the Quad?"
"Even better, I'll show you. It's not too far."
"Thanks a lot. I'm Allison Scott by the way. Call me Allie"
"I'm Breanna Hill. Most people call me Bree."
"Nice to meet you."
"You too."
We continued the rest of the walk in silence. When we arrived at the Quad, I was overwhelmed with how many people there were. When you come from the little town of Smithsville, any crowd seemed large. Here it was just insane. Bree randomly grabbed my wrist and started dragging me into the crowd.
"Come on. I'll show you where to get checked in and everything."
"Alright."
She stopped at a table in the middle of the area and shoved me towards the person sitting behind it. He looked up at me and smiled.
"Name?"
"Allison Scott."
I watched as he searched through some papers and pulled one out, handing it to me.
"Okay, so that's your class schedule. Classes start in a week. Now you're going to head over to that table and get your dorm assignment. You'll receive your key and find out who your roomies are in the lobby of your dorm building."
I looked in the direction he was pointing and saw a table with a bunch of older girls sitting behind it. I shot the guy a weak smile and turned to make my way to the table he'd indicated. When I got there, one of the girls smiled brightly and asked for my name. I told her and she told me I'd be staying in West Side Residence Halls. When I turned around, Bree was smiling at me.
"What? Why are you smiling?"
"I'm in West Side too."
"Okay..."
"Well let's go find our rooms. That's actually where I was heading when I ran into you."
"Lead the way."
I followed her out of the Quad and back in the direction of my truck. We walked for about five minutes before we reached a large building with a bunch of girls milling around. She pushed her way through the crowd, leaving a path behind her for me to follow. When we got inside, I was a little surprised to see how organized the chaos was.
"Hi, welcome to West Side. Tell me your name and I'll tell you which dorm you're in, give you your key, and tell you who else will be sharing your dorm."
