Terra Mages have been gifted their powers from one of the Valar— Queen of the Earth— Yavanna. She declared the Terra Mages to be a good people, entrusting them with their gifts to use them for good and to protect those who needed help. She gifted the Mages with a precious gem, one that shined as bright as the moon and reflected the colors of the world. She declared this gem a Dýnami Zoís, a LifeForce for the Terra Mages. This gem gives into the Mages a long life in which they are to wander the earth to protect the people and watch over the lands. However, as the land grew older so did the Mages, the magical beings soon growing tired of wandering and deciding to upon realizing the dwindling glow and life of their precious gem.
The Mages, after years of contemplation, took up residence in the forest of Middle Earth, feeling more comfortable with the trees, rocks, and woodland creatures than with humans. It wasn't long before the Mages decided to split yet again when their plan to stay alive didn't work, however this time into different ranks. The different ranks of Terra Mages each took a part of the Dýnami Zoís. The LifeForce was split into three, one going to the Therapeftís Rank, one to the Polemistís Rank, and the last to the Periplanómenos Rank. Each rank of Terra Mages was to watch over their third of the precious gem as they went back into the world.
However, greed soon spread among some of these ranks, some Elder's wanting to keep the fragment of the gem for themselves, hoping that their life would soon flow again. So to keep the three fragments of the gem secure, the others, who had not been taken by greed, broke it once more into smaller pieces. Upon coming of age, each young Terra Mage is given a fragment of the gem. They are told to keep this gem safe and protected, and that by doing so they will be able to live and protect those who need it. However a gem, no matter how magical and full of life, can only be split so many times and given to so many people.
The Dýnami Zoís gems can no longer be split, and while some ranks of the Mages see this as a good thing, saying that there is no need to split it anymore, others say it is a problem. The Periplanómenos Rank, the wandering tank, sees this as a good thing. The elder of this rank, Osier, has declared that there is no longer a need to split the gem, as the Elder before him had passed and is no longer wanting to keep it for himself. However a warning is still issues to those Mages who received a fragment of the gem, including his daughter, Ianthe. They are told to continue to protect this fragment with their life and it will protect them. The fragment of the gem still holds a great power and LifeForce for the Mages, and though the danger has passed, the elders of each rank still advise them to watch over it.
