Hey friends, so this story is taking a serious turn away from what happened in the original, but idk I keep on getting notifications that this is on someone's reading list and i honestly feel bad and yeah i'm basically rewriting the story but it's on the same thing.
Eva walked down the hallway of her new school. She didn't know anything other than this was a middle school, where all kids are automatically assholes. She would never say that out loud of course, but that didn't make it not true. At lunch, she looked at all the tables. She didn't know any of the cliques, but she did see a kid sitting in the corner, alone. He didn't look sad, he looked content. He had bulky headphones on and a sketchbook in front of him. She decided he seemed safe to approach.
"Hello?" there was no response from him, he seemed to be in the zone. She silently sat across from him and ate her food. After a bit, he looked up and their eyes locked together.
"How long have you been sitting here."
"All of lunch."
"Huh. Why?"
"You seemed approachable."
"Huh. Okay," He put his headphones back on, but then paused.
"What is it?" She asked.
"You're new aren't you?"
"How could you tell?"
"Because you're sitting here."
"So?"
"With me. Neil Watts."
"I. Eva Rosalene. Am sitting with Neil Watts."
And that's how it began.
They spent all their time together either in school or at Eva's house. Never at Neils. He would also sometimes randomly disappear. The first time she asked she got "I was lost on a deserted island and I could only eat meerkat." so she decided to not pry. She never pried when his hands would start fidgeting when saying she couldn't come over to his house, she didn't pry when she saw other picking on him for unexplained things. She only pried once.
It was the beginning of sophomore year. She had been in a mix of camps and family road trips, so she hadn't seen him all summer. He didn't even respond to a single text she sent when she was free. She thought for sure their relationship was over. Then she saw him walking down the hall. He was thin with dark circles under his eyes with a cup of coffee. Unfortunately, he was still shorter than Eva. But that didn't matter.
"I was going to say he's alive, but I don't think that statement works anymore," she said, leaning against the locker next to him.
"Maybe if you said it more like Dr. Frankenstein when Frankenstein's monster came alive," he tossed his old backpack into his locker carelessly.
"Where have you been?"
"Sunbathing on a volcano in Hawaii, you?"
"Where. have. you. been." Her voice was stern, slightly surprising Neil.
"Geez, it's none of your buisness," he pulled out a 3DS from his bag and started playing Fantasy Life.
"You ghosted me throughout all of summer and when I finally see you again you look like you just get picked out of a dumpster. Tell me."
He looked away and bit his nails, "My grandpa died."
Years later, he would tell her about stargazing on the hill, but for now that was his little secret.
