"Favorite... food?" Eva asked from the other side of the living room. She was sat down on the floor in Neil's living room, while he was laying on the couch.
"I don't know... make the category smaller," they had been asking these random questions for an hour, trying to distract him from the pain overloading his senses.
"How about... breakfast?" she said i'm response.
"I don't usually eat breakfast, but I loved waffles when I was a kid," he shrugged.
"Toaster waffles or regular waffles?"
"Well you can't go wrong with either, but toaster PANCAKES on the other hand, those suck."
"They do not!" She yelled back defensively.
"You had toaster pancakes in the mornings? I thought you'd be one of those no-nonsense family meals kinda family."
"What?"
"You know, those families where every meal is home cooked and you can't have food in your room so all meals are family meals?" She face palmed in response.
"Oh my gosh, that was my family."
They laughed together, until Neil quickly changed the subject from family to animals, hoping there wouldn't be a comment on it. She recognized the tension in the topic, it wasn't new for him to brush off stuff about his home life, it was normal for him to brush off all things.
They were walking down the street holding ice cream cones and the half melted ice cream barely contained inside. They had just graduated middle school and celebrated with ice cream. On the street were a couple of restaurants, a dollar store, a smoke shop, and toy store.
"I'm just saying, that place was a hellhole and I'm NEVER going back."
"Neil, we have to cut through the building to get to gym," she laughed and took a lick of her ice cream.
"I'll just skip gym, it's fine," he smiled at her.
As they passed by the smoke shop, she recognized that the door was open, letting all the smells air out of the store. She saw him wrinkle his nose.
"Smells like my dad's house," he blurted out. Eva stood there in silence.
"Neil-"
"What kind of a person likes caramel ice cream? I think you're messed up in the head," he smirked and licked the scoop of ice cream.
"That's so unfair! What kind of kid likes coffee ice cream?" She shoved him.
"The strong ones, that's who."
"Why do you like jellyfish so much anyways?" he asked.
"It's a long story, believe me. Just for now take that they're pretty."
"Ugh, fine," she watched him tense up and hold back a whimper.
"Shouldn't you be getting sleep?" she asked.
"Sleep is for the weak, Eves. Just like caramel ice cream," he grinned.
"Are we seriously still talking about that? It tastes good!"
"Well, that doesn't mean that coffee isn't superior."
"Oh get over yourself," she smiled at him, and he smiled back.

Things were going to be rough for a bit, but they could handle it together.
