The office building seemed larger than it did before, more scary perhaps. It was like a shadow following her, reminding her that in the end, everyone is going to die. Her, Neil, her family. Eva crossed her arms, trying to figure out some way to make herself smaller. She didn't want extra attention right now, but more importantly she needed to get everything in order before Neil came back. She needed him to have a smooth transition into working again. So, she worked on paperwork for hours on end, both hers and his. Her eyes had been glued to the screen until Roxie walked in and tapped her on the shoulder.
"Hey Hon, good to see ya back!" Her peppy voice startled her and broke her out of the trance she'd been in for the past hour.
"Thanks, good to be back," she responded blatantly.
"...How's Neil doing?" she asked in a softer tone.
"Better, he should be coming back in the next week or so."
"That's great!"
"Yeah, it is," she smiled. "Hey, can you do me a favor and be extremely vague about why he's been gone for so long and make sure they don't make a big deal about him coming back?"
"Of course! But I would expect Neil to want balloons and a welcome back banner, wouldn't he?"
"umm... not this time. Thanks Rox, I've got to get back to work."
"Alright, see ya around!" with that, the short blonde doctor left her office.
Eventually, Eva looked at the clock. It read 12:18 am. She rubbed her forehead and checked her phone for notifications, seeing none, she continued on with the paperwork. Countless emails and forms spreading through her computer, corrupting her mind like a virus.
"I'm no where near done..." she muttered.
Eva Rosalene was not a perfectionist, but she couldn't bring herself to give a half-assed report to her boss. Her vision started to blur and her breathing became rapid. All the work racing through her brain exhilarated by the caffeine and sleep deprivation. It was like bright neon lights were shining in front of her saying "You can't do this" and "You're not good enough".
"Eves?" She recognized his tired voice immediately, even over the phone.
"N-neil- sorry I didn't mean to call you..." She had called him in panic, a habit she didn't even know she had.
"It's getting pretty late, are you still working at that shithole?"
"Neil! You're on speaker!"
She heard his laugh play from her phone. Eventually, she started laughing too.
"Seriously though, you should head home. I'm boreeeed."
"Oh get over yourself you baby," she took a deep breath.
"Moron."
"Idiot."
They both laughed.
"I'll see you in a bit," Eva smiled.
"See ya," he smiled too, though they couldn't see each other's faces.
