At this point, Neil had gone back to his dark and cramped apartment. But now in his room, there was an air mattress with a mess off blankets on top. Eva had stayed with him the first night he came home, and then she finally pried.
"Neil, what are the painkillers for," she looked him dead in the eyes, or at least tried to through his mirrored glasses. He swallowed, not expecting this question to come so soon.
"Why don't we watch a movie?" He responded.
"You said you would tell me the truth," the words felt like they stabbed Neil in the gut.
"I have a pain condition..." he kept his eyes to the floor, "I was diagnosed when I was 18, and I've been taking pills ever since..." what a short answer it was, though it could not explain everything.
"Are you dying?" her voice shook, she couldn't loose him. Not now.
"I guess, but not really- I... don't know"
"Well what do you know?"
"That... it just keeps getting worse. I wake up in the morning sometimes and feel like I can't get out of bed," he failed to admit that she was the reason he still did.
"I-I'm sorry," She hugged him, and they sat on the couch for the next hour talking about anything but what they just heard. The next morning Eva woke up before him and started to pour herself a bowl of cereal. She probably had a bit before Neil would be awake. She turned the TV on a random channel and watched it until Neil stumbled into the room half asleep.
"Hey Eves," he started making a cup of coffee.
"Hey, how are you feeling?"
"Great, especially since I have a paid sick leave," He smirked and shot finger guns at Eva.
"I wonder what Sigmund's going to do without their "bestest detectives"" She shoved him.
"Eh, they'll have one of 'em. Maybe you'll get paired up with Alistar."
"Actually..." She looked away, she thought a lot about what she was going to do last night. She just needed to get him onboard with the plan. That was the rough part.
"Dumplin, no. I can't let you waste your 'vacation days' watching me lay around the house," he sipped on his coffee.
"Just hear me out, okay? Now- do you know what caused your heart attack?" He stayed quiet for a second, both of them knowing the answer.
"There's no way," once he caught onto her idea, he immediately refused.
"So what, you'll just DIE!?"
"Yeah! I'd rather die then be in pain 24/7!" He defensively yelled back.
"Think about all our patients and their regrets, do you really want to be one of them?!"
"Of course I don't, but I can't change my circumstances!"
It was the first genuine fight that they had had in a while, the last one being all the way back in highschool. It was over a dumb rumor, something they never thought could get them in such a heated conversation, but it did. There where whispers in the halls, and oblivious teachers waited in the classrooms.
"I heard Neil Watts was an accident"
The first time she heard it, she didn't think much of it. It almost went right through her, like it did Neil. Then when she heard it again, it made her pause. She'd never seen his house, she'd never heard him talk about his family- hell, she'd never even seen his parents. The thought that he would keep such a thing from her hurt her if she was being honest, but then again, it could all be a stupid rumor.
"Hey Neil, what's up with that rumor spreading around?"
"Which one?"
"The one about you."
This time he emphasized his words, "Which one?"
"The one... about you being an accident," he paused, then looked her in the eyes.
"It's just a stupid rumor, besides when did my life become their business."
"It's just... it lines up too well."
They started yelling at each other, Eva trying to get him to crack, and Neil trying to push her away. They didn't speak for weeks, until he finally spoke up and said something.
"So what if it's true, would you not want to be friends?"
"Of course I would still want to be friends... I just wish you would talk to me."
Years later, she was never sure of what the answer was.
