"New client," Eva popped her head into Neil's office.
Neil smirked in response, "New client."
The last case they had taken was when he had his heart attack, so it was going to be interesting to see them get back into the swing of things, especially with the new dynamic they had. Sure, he still was the overly energetic and witty one and she was still the calmer minded and get the job done one. But, they had developed a different way of interacting. One where there was prying, which lead to honesty.
Neil triumphantly picked up the machine holding it for a second until he winced and dropped it.
"Dammit," he groaned, trying to pick it up again and having to readjust his grip multiple times.
"Never thought I'd see the day where you wanted to carry the machine," Eva joked.
"I am simply being the strong male character I should be," he smirked.
"Seriously, you going to be okay to carry that through the lobby and to the car?"
"Yes, mom. I'll be fine."
"If you say so."
They walked out of the building together. Once they reached the company car, he lifted the heavy case into the trunk. He sighed once the case was out of his hands. They both stepped into the car and Eva started it.
"It's a three hour ride, so buckle in."
He groaned, "Why does it have to be so far."
"Hey, you aren't the one driving."
"Yeah well- you have a point..."
"Taken down by the great Eva Rosalene!"
He mimicked noises from an explosion, "nooo!"
They both laughed.
"So, who's the client?"
"Her name is Eleanor Kadile, eighty seven years old. Her wish is that she had pursued her life dreams sooner," Eva responded while turning on the blinker.
"Any idea what her dreams are?"
"Nope, not yet."
"Lovely."
They drove in silence for the next two hours, it was a comforting silence. The kind you have to be close to someone to have. However, the silence was abruptly interrupted by Neil whimpering and tensing up. His hands began shaking, and he was breathing heavily. Eva pulled the car over.
"Are you going to be okay?" she asked. He managed to nod in response. His face has gone pale. She carefully reached out her hand and placed it on his shoulder. At first, he flinched, surprised by the sudden touch. Then, he took a deep breath and smiled at Eva.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" she asked.
"I... guess? Music... kinda helps."
She turned on the radio and some random pop song came on.
"This okay?" she asked.
"Actually, let me connect my phone," he stumbled around with his phone until it started playing on bluetooth. It was a much more calming song, but she noticed him immediately blush when it came on. However, he tried to maintain a straight face as he rested his head on the car door's interior. She got back on the road and let the soft song take her focus
Often I am upset that I cannot fall in love but I guess
This avoids the stress of falling out of it
Are you tired of me yet?
I'm a little sick right now but I swear
When I'm ready I will fly us out of here
I'll cut my hair
To make you stare
I'll hide my chest
And I'll figure out a way to get us out of here
Turn off your porcelain face
I can't really think right now in this place
There's too many colors enough to drive all of us insane
Are you dead? Sometimes I think I'm dead
'Cause I can feel ghosts and ghouls wrapping my head
But I don't wanna fall asleep just yet
My eyes went dark
I don't know where
My pupils are
But I'll figure out a way to get us out of here
Get a load of this monster
He doesn't know how to communicate
His mind is in a different place
Will everybody please give him a little bit of space
Get a load of this train-wreck
His hair's a mess and he doesn't know who he is yet
But little do we know, the stars
Welcome him with open arms
Oh
Time is
Slowly
Tracing his face
But strangely he feels at home in this place
Eva liked the singer's voice, it was awfully soothing, she noticed neil had relaxed more. Suddenly, and the end of the song she heard a voice she could recognize anywhere
"What bullshit..." she heard a slight chuckle as the recording ended. It was then she realized, it was Neil singing in the recording. Why this song though? Why didn't he just skip it?
"You... you have a nice voice Neil," she gave him a sweet smile.
"Thanks, Eves..." she took his shaky hand and looked him in the eyes.
"Why that song?" she asked.
"Do you really want to know?" he asked.
"Yes."
He took a deep breath, "I found the song back in highschool, and it's stuck about how I feel about you."
The car was silent now, an awkward silent, it wasn't until Eva pulled over once more and stepped out of the car, and got Neil out as well that the silence ended.
"Dumplin, what are you-" he was cut off by Eva kissing him. At first she pulled away, afraid, but then they fell into a deeper kiss like they'd done it a million times before. Neil's arms wrapped around her waist and Eva holding his face.
"I'm ready to be in a relationship with you, are you ready to be in one with me?" she asked.
"Fuck yeah," he pulled her in for one more kiss before getting back on the road.
