The Frozen Heart

Chapter 9

Jack's POV

Well, this is awkward.  I'm sitting on her couch, barely moving a muscle.  Am I breathing? Who knows.  

I've been sitting here for what has seemed like years.  My hands are clammy, whhhy?  I actually think my body is numb from being in a stationary position for so long.

I'm practically twiddling my thumbs.  Where is Maysie? Or even her dad being here would lift the tension that I am now 100% sure I created myself. I hear a noise beside me which makes me jump.  It's just a cat.  Wait, scratch that, not just a cat, but the cutest cat I've ever seen.  

"Awh, hey little kitty," I whisper to the cat, whose long white fur was very soft to touch.  It's head met my hand without hesitation and a wave of purrs erupted from its body.  A sudden urge to have one of my own didn't surprise me.

"His name is Eddison." I hear a familiar voice.  I look up and see Maysie leaning against the doorway.

I smile, and continue to pet Eddison, "Where'd you run off to?" I probably put in too much effort to not be creepy, that I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it came out to be.  

"Oh, yeah, sorry.  I forgot to take my medicine." She explains, looking down as if she's embarassed.

"Medicine?" I unintentionally ask.  

"My inhaler, I have asthma." 

"Oh." Oh? Out of all the things I could've said, I chose 'oh'?  Ugh, she was obviously embarassed about it.

This girl is nice.  But I can't stay.  I need to find out a way to become a Guardian again.  I just have no clue on where to start.

It's 1:32 am.

Maysie and her father let me sleep on the couch.  Eddison is curled up at my feet.

I need to leave now, not that I want to. Even though her father terrifies me, Maysie is someone whome I probably won't forget.  I wish she wasn't mortal, so she could live forever and she can learn all the science and math she can.  Yeah, she'd like that, I think.

It's time to leave.  Manny should be out.  Could it be possible that...? Well never mind, I'll find out now won't I.

I tip toe across the room towards the front door, trying extremely hard to avoid a creaky board.

Before I decided to leave, I left a note on the couch explaining that I had something I needed to deal with and that I couldn't include that details.  I also said to not look for me, because (even though I didn't mention it in the note) if all goes as planned, their search would be worthless because I would be a Guardian again.  

I twist the doorknob, and take my leave.

Manny is shrouded by clouds.  I need to find an spot where I can see him.

I head north, to the woods I ventured into earlier.  I'll just tree-hop.

I'm walking, as I hear a branch above me snap.

"Whatcha doin',Jack?" I hear an all-too-familiar voice.

"(F/n)?!" I gasp, as I lay eyes on (f/n).  Her veneer is off, and my gut tells me to turn back.  I know that's dumb, because she's much faster than me.

"Did you miss me, Jack?" She asks kindly. "I sure missed you, I wish you were still a Guardian." She pouts out her bottom lip.  If this weren't so threatening of a situation, I would've found that really cute.

I stay silent.

"Jack, please stop ignoring me," she pleads. "I miss you, we ALL miss you." Tears well up in her eyes.  She jumps down from the tree and lands in front of me.  She places her hands on both sides of my face.  Could she have changed? My brain is telling me to run far away, but then my heart, as cheesy as it sounds, is telling me to stay.  

"I just don't know what to do." I admit in barely a whisper.  She pulls me into an embrace, one I've longed for a long time.

"Just follow me, Jack. I know where to start." She says into my ear.  I hug tighter, "Ok.".  She lets go, and takes me by the hand and leads me into the forest.  I allow her to lead.
