Waiting for September 1st might have been the most aggravating thing about Y/N's year.
He had never been more antisocial.
Every day at school was a burden for him, he simply loitered around, doodled on his workbooks, completed his schoolwork as quickly as possible and left.
At the orphanage his daily schedule hadn't changed much. But he had started going to bed earlier so he could move on to the next day as quickly as possible.
All of his free time was spent studying his magic books. He found Hogwarts: A History especially interesting. He found it important to know all about his future school.
The most exciting part of his day was always polishing his cauldron, and cleaning his brass scales. He even spent hours simply staring at his wand, wondering what wonders it was capable of, though restricted by the Ministry's stupid law.
His cat always kept him company, he decided to call her Coconut. Or Coco for short.
Coconut always remained by his side. Except when she went to hunt. Being a magical creature, she possessed an almost human-like intelligence. She understood his every word and even nodded when she agreed with him. Ellie simply adored Coconut. She spent a vast amount of time with her and Coconut also loved to spend time with Ellie.
Coconut was smart enough not to show her intelligence around the other kids. Which Y/N was extremely grateful for. He always expressed this gratitude by topping up on cat treats at the local supermarket. Before he left Diagon Alley, he had exchanged a considerable amount of Wizard money into muggle money. Every once in a while, he treated Coconut, Ellie and himself to something nice.
Benjamin Richardson was still attempting to get him into the football team. As usual, Y/N ignored anything the ginger-haired idiot had to say. That didn't exactly stop him though.
It was getting bothersome, having to put up with the same nonsense from the idiot every day. So bothersome in fact that on the 16th of March Y/N decided to shut him up for good.
Y/N had had a normal, boring day at school. Ben pleading with him every day had become part of his daily routine now. He set of in a walk from the school, relieved to be almost home so he could study the levitation charm.
"Y/N!"
Here we go. Y/N thought bitterly.
"Hey man, can we talk?"
"Piss off." Y/N spat.
"Huh?"
"How long is this gonna last you twit?"
Y/N asked.Ben pretended to be oblivious. "I just wanna talk to you."
For the first time in a while. Y/N felt a feeling of rage swim through his body. Bunching his fingers into a fist. He lost all sense of logic and slammed his fist into the boys jaw.
Ben crumpled to the floor holding his jaw in pain. He looked up at his attacker with fear and confusion etched in his eyes.
"If you ever, come near me again, with the intention to even breathe a word to me about football, you will be lucky to escape with only a bruised jaw." he growled fiercely with as much venom in his tone as he could muster.
Ben backed away slightly, obviously scared senseless, and sprinted away.
Y/N had no idea he could be so intimidating. But Ben never bothered Y/N again after that.
As September the 1st drew nearer, Y/N grew more and more excited, and it showed in his personality. He was more helpful with chores in the orphanage, always did his homework on time (even if it was a tedious waste of time.) and even attempted to socialise with the other children, and to Annie's delight.
The same couldn't be said for Ellie however.
With each passing day drawing nearer to September 1st, she grew moodier and less like her usual optimistic self. She had made the unspoken decision to spend as much time with Y/N as possible. Her friends were beginning to feel a little concerned in fact. So was Y/N when Ellie's determination became downright clinginess.
On the last day of school before the summer holidays. Y/N had finally left to go home, feeling happier than he ever had to no not put up with that ridiculous school anymore. No more meaningless muggle curriculum, no more pointless hours waiting for the day to end, and best of all, no more idiots begging him to join the football team.
However, he returned to the orphanage to the sound bawling. The minute the front door had swung shut, Y/N was sent flying to the floor by what seemed to be a little blonde wrecking ball.
Ellie had wrapped her arms around his waist and began screaming about how close September 1st was now, just the holidays left and she'd never see him every day like she was used to.
The way Ellie was crying, you'd think she would never see him again.
For the rest of the day, Ellie stayed by Y/N's side. Not even leaving to play with Coconut.
It was like that for most of the Summer holidays.
Y/N even woke up in the mornings to find Ellie in his bed, snuggling into him and mumbling in her sleep.
Finally, after a long summer holiday, it was August 31st. The last day of Y/N's summer holidays.
Y/N woke up that morning feeling more optimistic than he ever had in his entire life. Ellie, however, spent most of the morning crying.
Annie was also feeling a bit upset. Tommorow would be the day she dropped one of her beloved children to a magical school.
She would be lying if she said she wasn't concerned about the safety of a such a school. A school that had spells flying around left and right was bound to be dangerous right?
On the other hand, seeing Y/N so happy was a rare treat to witness. Even if it did mean the constant unhappiness of the usually always-happy Ellie.
Y/N had spent the entire day happily taking up the other children's chores and helping Annie around the orphanage. Whereas Ellie spent the whole day stuffing her face with chocolate. 'Stress eating.' as Annie called it.
Y/N couldn't sleep that night. He kept tossing anf turning, thinking about the great day he would have tommorrow.
His door creaked open slightly, Y/N, knowing who it was, pretended to be asleep.
A little blonde-haired head poked around the door, sniffling a little. Ellie crept into the room and lay into the bed with Y/N.
"I know you're awake." she said softly.
Y/N opened his E/C eyes to gaze into her tear-filled green ones. "Hey." he whispered.
Ellie said nothing and simply buried her head into his chest. They lay like that for a while.
"You will write to me won't you big brother?" she asked.
"Every day if you want me to."
There was silence for while.
"I'll miss you."
Y/N chuckled and hugged her tighter. "I'll miss you too sis. But I'll still be around in the holidays. I won't be gone forever."
"Y/N?"
"Yeah?"
"Why are you so happy to join this school?"
"I told you already. It'll have people like me there." he said.
Ellie frowned. "But I thought you always told me you weren't interested in making friends."
Y/N smiled at the power of her brainbox.
"Well, maybe when you're older I'll tell you what's so special about this school. But you're not old enough to know right now."
"Okay."
There was then the sound of soft snoring. Y/N looked down at Ellie's head and smiled at her sleeping figure.
He then realised how much he would miss Ellie when he was gone.
